List of famous big game hunters edit

Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your inclusion of Donald Anderson to the list of famous big game hunters, unfortunately your entry was unsourced and so can not be verified as is Wikipedia's policy. This link outlines that policy. I am guessing from your user name that you are the author of the soon to be released biography of Donald Anderson The last white hunter: reminiscences of a colonial shikari, whilst I am sure he was a most fascinating man, Donald's fame appears to be solely due to him being his father's son and not due to his big game hunting. I wish you every success with the publication. Kind regards, Cavalryman V31 (talk) 11:01, 16 January 2018 (UTC).Reply

Hi I'm not sure how you define unsourced or in-verified and I would be happy to provide any information that's needed. Kenneth Anderson (like many of the hunters listed) became famous as a result of the books they wrote, or were written about them. So, wouldn't it be fair to give Donald Anderson the same opportunity, before writing him off ? My book 'the last white hunter' is a soon to be published biography of Don, and if a book is being published, wouldn't that verify the authenticity of my claim that Donald belongs to the list ? Again, I'm not sure what the parameters are, to define how a hunter has to be included, but do take a look at my website www.thelastwhitehunter.com for further validation that he deserves a place among the famous hunters from India, and not just based on the fact that he was Kenneth's son. Here is further proof - an article carried by one of India's leading newspapers on the book - https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chennai/colonial-shikari-lived-to-hunt-but-died-a-recluse/articleshow/62407741.cms

Yes I saw the article in the Times of India, unfortunately it did not include most of the detail in the entry. Once your book has been released and so the entry is verifiable, I will be happy to work with you to correctly cite it and reitroduce it. Kind regards, Cavalryman V31 (talk) 19:38, 16 January 2018 (UTC).Reply
Hello, The book has been released. You can check the same on Amazon India. Does this fit the criteria of being verified ?

Hi, The book is now listed on Amazon.com, Australia and UK. Could you allow the wiki post to be published ?

Hello, I have seen the reviews on Amazon, congratulations on both the release and the incredible reception your book has received. Yes, now the book is published I think we can reference it along with Man eaters and jungle killers to include the entry. Unfortunately due to work I have very little time for the next month, but can you give an indication of roughly how many large game animals Donald shot in his life? In particular tiger and leopard, but also bear, deer (which I know he shot), wild boar and perhaps elephant. At a minimum I would like to include the number of big cats (and bear and elephant) he shot then list all of the other big game species he shot. Also, which districts he hunted in? Additionally, did he only shoot with the .423 Mauser? I have seen reference to a .30-06 he used as a backup and for deer. Kind regards, Cavalryman V31 (talk) 07:06, 11 March 2018 (UTC).Reply

I would like to include him alongside the other big game hunters of India, not just for the Wikipedia entry on 'Man eaters and jungle killers'. According to Don, he shot about 50 leopards, 8 tigers and 5 elephants. I don't know how many bears, gaur, wild boar and deer he shot.

Sorry, I meant we can use both The last white hunter and Man eaters and jungle killers as references for the entry. Are those numbers you've listed in the book? If you're happy, when I get a chance (likely next weekend) I will add his entry. Kind regards, Cavalryman V31 (talk) 09:36, 11 March 2018 (UTC).Reply

No, they are not listed in the book — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2404:F801:8028:1:F87F:3DC4:895A:6D55 (talk) 02:42, 12 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Does the book detail all of the species he did shoot? What sort of big game hunting details are covered in the book? Cavalryman V31 (talk) 08:46, 16 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Yes, the book lists down all the species he shot. It also captures about 5 stories where she shot a couple of tigers, at least 6 leopards, a couple of elephants and few bears. It also has details of taxidermy, angling for the mahseer, etc. The book is not restricted to big game hunting alone. It captures the transformation of the jungles of south India over 100 years and also provides a social perspective into the lives of an Anglo Indian who chose to stay back after independence.

Joshua, I have re-added the entry, please can you you tell me Donald's full name? Additionally, do you have a photograph of Donald posing with some shot game? I don't think the previous photograph is appropriate for this page as it has no hunting flavour. Kind regards, Cavalryman V31 (talk) 13:43, 30 March 2018 (UTC).Reply

Donald's full name is Donald Malcolm Stuart Anderson

Thank you I have added both. What are your thoughts on below? Kind regards, Cavalryman V31 (talk) 08:14, 31 March 2018 (UTC).Reply

This is great. Could you link the book 'The Last White Hunter' to the listing on Amazon India ?

Hi Cavalryman V31, could you create the page for Donald Anderson, please ?

Full article edit

Joshua, I think there are probably enough references to justify a full article on Donald, it wouldn't be extensive but a tidy little article. I think it could look a little like James H. Sutherland's page, looking like:

Introduction
Biography
Split into sections, possibly early life, working life, later years
Hunting
A more extensive summary of Donald's hunting career than included on the big game hunters page
Bibliography
Kenneth's books that Donald contributed to
References

The page would be linked to Kenneth Anderson, List of big game hunters, .423 Mauser (to which I have already added mention of Donald) and we could possibly add links to Harry Black and the Tiger and some others. What are your thoughts? Kind regards, Cavalryman V31 (talk) 00:17, 31 March 2018 (UTC).Reply

That's a great idea, thank you. Do give me a few days and I'll send you details on Donald for a full article.

Early years Donald Malcolm Stuart Anderson was born on 18th February 1934. His Kenneth Douglas Stuart Anderson was a famous hunter and author, often considered to be Jim Corbett's equivalent in south India. Donald studied at Bishop Cotton's Boys school, Bangalore, representing the school in cricket, football and atheletics. He was also a champion boxer at school.

Professional hunter Donald shot his first panther in 1947 and shot tigers, panthers, bears, elephants, bison, wild boar and deer till 1974. His favourite haunt was Ramanagaram (called Closepet during the British regime), but hunted all over Mysore and Madras Presidency. He started a unit called International Hunters along with a friend Paddy Keeler, and took clients hunting, including Barney Berlinger, who has mentioned him in the book 'Danger Down The Sights'.

Angler After the Wildlife Act of India was passed that prohibited hunting, Donald took up angling, mostly on the Cauvery river. He was a champion angler and still holds a record recognized by WASI (Wildlife Association of South India) for a mahseer that weighed 90 pounds in 1989.

Hollywood Donald starred as a stunt double for Stewart Granger in the film Harry Black and the Tiger in 1957. The film was shot in Bandipur.

Hunting preferences His favourite rifle was a .423 Mauser, but he owned many other guns including a .404 double barreled Jeffrey, Greener 12 bore shotgun, .470 Nitro Express, .30-06 Springfield and a military model M1 Garand.

Hi, this is good. Could you publish this, please ?

Hi Joshua, I apologise I have been very busy with work for several weeks, hopefully I will get to it in the next fortnight. Cavalryman V31 (talk) 22:06, 26 April 2018 (UTC).Reply

Any luck ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.171.165.196 (talk) 13:04, 29 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi, could you publish the same and also cross reference it to the Kenneth Anderson wiki page ?

Thank you for your contributions edit

Hi Joshua, I had not noticed your additions to the Kenneth Anderson article but more importantly your book is a terrific addition to the original sources now available for improving the page. You won't remember but I met you at the book release at the British Library. I changed the date of death on the Kenneth Anderson entry from 30 August to 14 August per your book and added references. Now that you have published the book, any edits citing it that you add might be seen as conflict of interest although you could probably cite other sources without such worries. Please feel free to let me know if you need any assistance here on Wikipedia. Shyamal (talk) 16:48, 25 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi Shyamal, I just checked and the date in my book is incorrect, I had just taken Donald's word for it, and it was very careless of me, not to have checked the grave. Kenneth passed away on the 30th of August.

Oh no!! Never mind, fixed now. Shyamal (talk) 17:55, 26 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
