Re: HHS article edit

Thanks for getting to me about that. I went to Stone Bridge and I live in the area that was affected by the move and my little sister went to Heritage after attending SB for a couple of years; she didn't like it very much, but others I know who went there the first couple years didn't like it either because of the very small junior class. While I was in high school before Stone Bridge opened, I remembered teachers handing out pamphlets about boundary changes which showed my neighborhood in the Stone Bridge zone, and the Loudoun County High zone while the school board was arguing about which neighborhoods would be affected. Unfortunately, I don't have those anymore because that happened a long time ago.

As for actual numbers and references, the Web Archive of LCPS's site may show some of these boundaries and articles about that. The Loudoun Times Mirror is another source out there that may have stuff about the opening. The VA Dept of Education's site gives numbers about enrollment figures at 9/30 of every school year, and LCPS sometimes adjusts that as the school year progresses. The statement I wrote about the "racial achievement" gap showed on a middle school's site (either Sterling or Simpson Middle School's site, but Heritage was mentioned there).

As for my comments on the general mood of the school, now that I'm reading it a day or two later, it is a let down on them. I'll delete those. Thanks for offering to help. I'll give you more sites/info for sources on the school.

No problem. I myself just graduated from Broad Run so I do have a bit of interest in the LCPS articles. I went ahead and rewrote some of the history section to remove biased statements and add citations. I removed the racial achievement gap statement because based on the 2005 AYP report for the school, I didn't see the gap narrowing. It still seems pretty large and consistent with the rest of the county. What data did the middle school sites base this claim on? -- Johnny06man 13:39, 7 August 2006 (UTC)Reply


Recent Broad Run edits edit

Some good contribs on Loudoun schools (thanks). I have a concern though about some of your recent edits for BRHS. Are you editorializing too much about Spartan Read and FLEX? I agree that there are some teachers that do not adhere strictly to the policy guidelines and certainly students and teachers have a variety of opinions about this (both about the policy and the divergences). Conversely, though, there are quite a few instructors that do utilize the time as outlined in the policies, and both teachers and administrators (and even some parents) see some benefits from these programs. An argument could be offered that these practices are "not a joke", effectively counter-balancing your published assessment.

Also, what is your supporting source for the Band History section statement that Kelley was "falsely accused by a disgruntled freshman upset with her grade in his class"? I recall the voluminous speculation at the time about the accusation's veracity, but the publicly-known facts about the case do not appear to support the false accusation assertion. Based on the cited news sources, perhaps this statement should be emended? Let me know what you think? Again, thanks for your contributions and keep adding them. Looking back on my edits, I can understand what you are saying. Perhaps you can revise that section to properly balance the two viewpoints? I will agree with you that many teachers support the program, but at the same time I know a good deal of teachers along with many students feel differently. I would just like both points to be expressed in the article.
As for the band history section and the false accusation statement, I also agree it does not sound very neutral. But I do stand by the main point of the statement. My sister was involved in this scandal (friends with the accusers) and was witness to the original accusation. Basically what happened was the freshman girl was upset with her grade and falsely confessed to several students that she had been sexually abused by Kelley. It was only coincidence that one of the students who heard the confession actually was abused, along with another student. Hence, there were originally 3 accusations, but Kelley was only charged with 2 of them. The freshman involved was suspended for I think a week for lying to the administrators. Unfortunately because of privacy rules protecting the freshman, this information was never published by a news organization, hence I have no way of providing a citation for this fact. I would like to find a way to keep this information in the article because I think it is important, but I will understand if it needs to be removed. --Johnny06man 16:58, 28 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Your re-edits look great and I think you effectively make the points you want for Flex and Spartan Read. As for the other, I understand your position, however, since there's no supporting public record of the events leading to the charges readers may question the strength of your version. You may want to clarify that while the intitial accusation was bogus, the act of making it caused two real victims to come forth. Otherwise it appears those couple sentences are self-contradictory. How about, "Kelley was only caught after being falsely accused by a disgruntled freshman upset with her grade in his class. Although this initial accusation was bogus, it ironically prompted two actual victims to come forth with similar allegations. Director of the band program since 1997, parents and students were shocked by his arrest after knowing him for over 4 years. However, Kelley pled . . . ."? All of the information regarding the Broad Run band incident are true. The student who wasn't happy with her grade in Kelley's class, that I remembered was a rumor, but I went to Stone Bridge when all of this was going on. Thanks for adding the citation to the JMU article. I wasn't the one who added the fact tag to it, but I didn't think it was appropriate that it was removed as "common knowledge" because people on campus knew it, but I wasn't going to press the issue and get into a revert war over a four-letter word that starts with an F :) Keep up the good work on the article! I'm spending a bit of my break working on my own college's page but know that it'll be a little difficult since we're a little obscure. Geo links in JMU article edit

Hi and thanks for your contributions to the James Madison University article.

I have one question: why did you change the geolink from the {{Geolinks-US-streetscale}} format to {{coor title dms}}? It seems most articles use the former format, for example University of Pennsylvania, University of Virginia, The White House and numerous others. If you want to change it back, I have no problem with that. I had started to add the one to the top before I saw you had already included it at the end. I personally like having the link at the top, and I'm not too familiar with including coordinates in articles. The coordinates at the top. Using the {{coor title dms}} format displays the coordinates at the top of the article with a link to view different maps of the given location. I guess there isn't a difference. I did not realize that the streetscale template also included that information at the top. I knew it had the extra links at the bottom of the page, but I never noticed it added the coordinates at the top as well. Your code seems to satisfy both of our wishes, so we can go with it. No problem. It really can be quite confusing the first few weeks of a new year. I always had to correct myself when I dated papers for school. I went back to your original questions, and I am having difficulty remembering where I found those two pieces of information. The orchestra statement I think might have been more of something I heard from the strings teacher when I went to Broad Run. I remember seeing something on the LCPS web site, but I cannot remember what. Since I have no proof of this, I am going to remove that statement from the page. As for lagging AYP, I think I saw that on Broad Run's site, in some sort of administrative-faculty-student review panel report. Found it. It was in the school report card found on the Virginia Department of Education's site here. The school pass rate in 2006 for science was 86%, while the county as a whole was at 89%. Broad Run beat the county average in all the other fields. -- Johnny06man 22:20, 5 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Peer Reviewer Thingamajigy edit

Johnny06man, the peerreviewer js is interesting, but I'm not sure of the validity of all of the results. What do you think? Without hitting on all items right now, here's a few quick thoughts —

  • How much longer would we want the lead? I could see maybe a paragraph to summarize team accomplishments and mention some unique items (Mandarin Chinese?), but it is just a high school after all. As I write this, though, I'm thinking we can definitely add some things . . . .
  • I'll look through carefully, but dates seems okay to me (we should go through with a fine tooth comb, but I think most everything was caught as a follow-up to the GA Appraiser's suggestions -- we can look again).
  • I didn't think we had any "citations needed" flags left {{fact}}
  • Links: do we need more? It seems there's a sufficient number now (maybe too much)?
  • "It has been" -- yes, not weasel words, but statement probably in need of a cite. The renovation one probably could use a more solid reference and I've been tracking down more info about when those took place (first one in 71-72 I think when they added the cafeteria and the library, and the most recent was the gym, 2003-4?). As for the "intense rivalry", maybe some local newspaper articles?

Anyways, we should continue to pick over this. I am now curious about seeing how the js works.

Also, the new infobox looks good. Should we adopt it for all LCPS schools?

I really like that Infobox. How about instead of the pale green background we find some light versions of maroon and gold so it reflects the school colors? I'm trying to find some rgb values that don't look like sherbet, though. Thoughts? Jim Dunning 01:12, 9 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Check out the talk page for BRHS. I posted my response to the automated tool now. As for the infobox, I like how it has more individual labels, but at the same time I don't think we should go overboard. The infobox with everything filled in looks pretty long already. We should strive to make it concise, but still informative. I removed your additions to the BR box for superintendent and assistant principals. The superintendent feels unnecessary to me, since his job has more to do with the whole county and not one individual school. I think that field is available because some school heads may still be called superintendents (though I've never encountered this before). Assistant principals, I think there are just so many they don't all need to be there. The principal is the main face of the administration. Maybe include this info in the article body, but not in the infobox. Same with the athletics. It's a long list that is already in the athletics section, so I don't think it needs to be in the infobox (saves us a few lines too). Athletic conference info should stay though IMO.
I love this infobox too. I think it would be great to adopt for each school, but I think it would be better to use the same color scheme for all the schools. Matching each to school colors is a neat idea, but I like how having them all the same kind of links them all together. If you would prefer a different color pattern to the one already made, we could always tinker with it. I looked into your suggestion, but I feel confident that Active Musician is copying from Wikipedia. Take a look at the Wikipedia bios for Michael W. Smith, Itzhak Perlman, and Stan Kenton (I just randomly selected these artists). Now look at their biographies on Active Musician here, here, and here. The similarities are uncanny, and I doubt Wikipedia would have so many cases of blatant plagiarism. Most likely, since Active Musician is more a store than an encyclopedia, they mirror the articles from Wikipedia without citing it.
As to adding yourself to KKPsi brothers, just add [[Category:Wikipedians in Kappa Kappa Psi]] to your user page. Which chapter are you from? I'm at Eta Omicron, James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Robert W. Smith is one of our honoraries, so I've been trying to cleanup his article a bit, but I cannot find decent sources to verify a lot of the article. AEA -- Johnny06man 16:06, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I am from the Zeta Upsilon chapter at Troy University in Troy, Alabama. Robert W. Smith actually pledged at our chapter when he was in college and was initiated on April 2, 1977 so we have similar reasons for being interested in his page. Thanks for looking tinto the previous matter for me. I can personally verify some of his personal history from talking to him as a teacher, such as where he's from and his early years, but that's about it. I guess that's hard to cite. GA Sweeps invitation edit

Hello, I hope you are doing well. I am sending you this message since you are listed as a GA reviewer. I would like to invite you to consider helping with the GA sweeps process. Sweeps helps to ensure that the oldest GAs still meet the criteria, and improve the quality of GAs overall. Unfortunately, last month only two articles were reviewed. This is definitely a low point after our peak at the beginning of the process when 163 articles were reviewed in September 2007. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. All exempt and previously reviewed articles have already been removed from the list. Instead of reviewing by topic, you can consider picking and choosing whichever articles interest you.

We are always looking for new members to assist with the remaining articles, so if you are interested or know of anybody that can assist, please visit the GA sweeps page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. If only 14 editors achieve this feat starting now, we would be done with Sweeps! Of course, having more people reviewing less articles would be better for all involved, so please consider asking others to help out. Feel free to stop by and only review a few articles, something's better than nothing! Take a look at the list, and see what articles interest you.
