Albury platform

Hi I had some random jottings on the subject at Talk:Albury, New South Wales#Longest platform in the southern hemisphere?. It was always one of the claims to fame, but neeeds some qualiification.

From a discussion at railpage.org on Long Platforms, an Australian listing:

• Perth Terminal: 762 m
• Melbourne Flinders St pfm 1: ~708 m
• Port Pirie: 701 m
• Adelaide Keswick: 500 m
• Kalgoorlie: ?
• Albury sg: 456 m
• Melbourne Spencer St pfm 3: 434 m
• Melbourne Spencer St pfm 2: 420 m (ie 18 vehicles)
• Melbourne Spencer St pfm 1: 411 m (ie 18 vehicles)
• Roma St north-coast platform: ?
• Cronulla: 390 m
• Sydney pfm 1: 370 m (ie 16 vehicles)
• Melbourne Flinders St pfm 10 & 12: 350 m
• Maryborough (Vic): 348 m
• Broken Hill: ?
• Rockhampton: ?
• Mildura: ?

There is an air of confidence about these figures but I don't know their source. I thought the longest platform claim needed careful qualification though and one of those delightful factoids became, for me, a little tarnished.

Swifts Creek

Hi Jjron!
Have you got google earth handy? I think 37°15'48.66"S, 147°43'17.90"E is probably a better co-ordinate (I think, judgeing by flagstaff that that is the town center. Also do you think we should put something in about the flood? I've got some interesting pic comparisons:

Bairnsdale page is pretty impressive, well done! The flood pics ar scans off old "real" photos, the current ones are obviously 20D - btw what do you think of the HDR in that shot? I would personally trust Google more. Go to google earth and to the co-ords I sent above, and have a look - pretty sure it's the town centre. I think we dare :-) --Fir0002 12:18, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Yeah St Mary's looks pretty impressive from the inside. HDR stands for High Dynamic Range, and that is basically exposure bracketting, although I've been told you can do something like that by tone mapping RAW files - something I've never realy experimented with. Only problem there is Image:Old saint pauls 2.jpg - people might oppose on the grounds that there already is a similar FP.

The reason I was leaning towards Google is that it's likely (assuming someone cared) a person would use Google Earth to look at the co-ords and it should probably be accurate to that. And it also seems like maybe the Land vic rounded - which actually makes a considerable difference when viewing from Google Earth. Not sure if they did take into account relativity though! --Fir0002 10:08, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Actually, have you seen the omeo thing? Maybe we should make the SC page like that - it gos to another wiki project which gives links to find that location in various maps. It does however require only degrees and minutes so it's not as accurate --Fir0002 12:06, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

Sorry to hear that the SC page doesn't work with the info box - looks good on mine but I agree that it's more likely for someone to be running on 1024x768. So feel free to remove it if you want. The co-ords on Omeo are the similar to Google Earth's, and the difference can be put down to rounding (although latitude is out by a minute). I'm not sure if you can put alternative text with the info box, so assuming we stick with the info box, I think the best we'll get is the rounded co-ords.

Mapwise I think 203.45.20.235 took the Melbourne infobox and copied it over to SC page. I'd almost get the map off Omeo, but it is that bad it isn't worth the bother. There might be something on the commons I could use.

Nematode

Hi Jjron,

Sorry about all that, I got a little snappy too. Have no idea why, but these things happen :). I had assumed you had done biology at uni, as you can teach it at high school (at least I'd hoped). I just didn't like the comparison with the butterfly metamorphosis, they are too different to compare. Anyway, I will ask around, and see if anybody knows about this subject. Yeah that looks good now. Cloud removed - no need to crop though! ;-) Do you think Image:View from macmillans lookout - benambra.jpg could fit in anywhere? Thought I might give it a go on en FPC since it's got through com FPC. Incidentally since people are concerned that we are running low on FP's, maybe it's time to have a shot at nominating one of the St Mary's shots? I've uploaded the pano I told you about but the mighty Panorama maker couldn't handle it! There are a couple of stitching faults which are unlikely to get past the scrutiny of FPC. Also it's a bit noisy because I didn't use HDR on the images I had to lift the shadows quite a bit. Anyway see what you think. --Fir0002 11:37, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

Calibrating monitors

Since you didn't see the change in the fish fins, you should check the calibration image on FPC: If you have a flatscreen or laptop, the shadow detail may be impossible to get "right"... --Janke | Talk 08:05, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

I've just expanded this slightly, but I don't understand the text that you added to the sketch of the chapel. I really can't comprehend the idea of 6th century convicts going on a boat trip.
