hi

i dont really know what i am doing but here goes.

William Hawi is part of Lebanon history. He was a Lebanese politician and he was killed 1976 during his fight for independance. He should be included for his contribution to Lebanon's fight for freedom. This page should be linked to the "Lebanese people" page and to the Lebanon project thing... i just dont know how to do it.

As i said, i dont really know what i am doing. I also have relevant pictures that i would like to include but unforutnately i have not found out how yet....

Anyway, a simple googe search should show more information about the existance and life of William Hawi (or Haoui).

Hi there, The main reason for the nomination for deletion is that the article is biased (not neutral) and needs some heavy wikifying. Please read the links above, do the necessary changes and I'm sure that you will end up with a good article. See for instance Rafik Hariri as an example on how to do this. Cheers, ArchStanton 15:48, 21 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Look at Rafik Hariri as an example and open the edit tab. Notice that each section begins with ==Heading== - this creates those bold headings and separates the article into sections. If you want a section to be broken into subsections, use ===Sub Heading===. You don't need to use outline form with I.1.a. and stuff like that. This is the main thing most editors refer to when they say something needs to be wikified - that way it's not just a lot of text. I would even suggest copying the first paragraph of Rafik Hariri and pasting it into the new article, replacing the pertinent text, just to see what the formatting should look like.--Dmz5 10:11, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • All the complicated stuff at the top of Hariri's article in the edit tab translates into that nifty box on the article page with all the information about him. You might even try copying that stuff to the top of the new article and filling in whatever lines you can fill in.--Dmz5 10:15, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • Also, read WP:N, WP:V, WP:NPOV, and WP:NOR to get yourself situated and see what the other users are referring to in the deletion debate. "Notable" and "POV" (that is, "point of view") have very specific definitions on Wikipedia. ghits means google hits - some editors reason that if a subject has only a handful of google hits, it is not notable. Good luck --Dmz5 10:14, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

William Hawi

edit

Hi there! I hope that you don't interpret my actions on this article as unfriendly. An important Wiki-policy is to not bite the newcomers - and I really believe that you could be an important contributor to Wikipedia. I hope that I have not scared you off with all the links!

The reason for my suggestion to speedy delete the article was that it has all the signs of an article directly copied and pasted from another source. This is a violation to Wikipedia's copyright policy, and is a reason in itself for deletion. Your comments here has shown that you are fluent in English (better than me!) so I don't think this is the case anymore - but you should fix the section headings and the article will not look like a copy/paste-thing.

But please read the WP:NPOV and stick to facts because I still believe that Wikipedia-articles should not raise someone to martyrdom. It is a very loaded word that should be used with care. That is why it is still nominated for deletion. What I would suggest is that you to begin with strip the article down to a few facts (background, life, death, importance) and let it stay that way for some days. Actually, It could well happen that the article will expand by 'itself' by people adding to it. Then you can slowly expand the article yourself with more facts and preferably some images as time progresses and your experience with editing Wikipedia builds up. Good luck, and hope to see more of your edits in the future! ArchStanton 11:17, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Thank you for your suggestions ArchStanton, as i said, i am learning as i go and you have been of tremendious help. Maybe i should explain that the 'Martyrdom' of Hawi is a known and accepted fact in Lebanon by all political parties but i understand your point of view and i am currently working on making it more 'wikified'. Translating some words from Arabic to English is a bit tricky though. As for the copy/paste thing, well anything worthwhile you will find online about Hawi was actually submitted by myself on behalf of my mother, who is William Hawi's only daughter. So rest assured i have all information first hand and it is the result of 11 years of extensive research and documentation. My mother presented her findings for her Doctorate degree in History and even got the highest grade. :) Jinanez 11:36, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I like to add some remarks to your answer. Wikipedia is completely neutral. It is nor for, or against somebody. Therefore, any biography has to be treated in a neutral manner (see WP:NPOV. All facts, mentioned in your article, must rely on INDEPENDENT published sources (books, magazines, newspapers etc.) which are then cited as references or in-line notes (see WP:REF). Your own findings and documentation must still be in accordance with the official policy of WP:OR. Furthermore, the word "martyrdom" is a very loaded word, mostly used to designate Christian martyrs in Antique Rome or nowadays Muslim suicidal bombers. I think your grandfather deserves a better word than that. Read the guidelines I mentioned and follow the good advice of user:ArchStanton and in the end you will have an article you'll be proud of. Good luck. JoJan 13:45, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • I appreciate that Wikipedia is neutral and I was not trying to express an opinion or take sides. I will rewritten the article in a less 'biased' way upon your recommendations. For now I am learning my way through the editing in Wikipedia. As for "martyrdom" it is a word used heavily in the Lebanese culture and the information i have is all in Arabic hence the translation. I will come up with a less 'loaded' word though to comply with the rules. As for "independant" this article is a summary of 11 years of research and documentation, including newspaper clippings, meeting transcripts, interviews and voice recordings. I will cite the miscelleneous sources as per the rules also. I just need some time to get my act together.Jinanez 14:19, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
What a wonderful article! I was surprised to see it since the article about the Kataeb Party was in such poor shape. I wrote the Hebrew article about the party, and I'll incorporate some of the information in the Hawi article to it. When I have some more free time, I'd like to translate it as a whole to Hebrew. I see you know French (like many of the Lebanese intelligentsia), so you might find this study about the Kataeb interesting. السلام عليكم Lizrael 15:39, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Images of William Hawi

edit

I have initiated a discussion of the photos below at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images:

Thuresson 15:09, 18 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

    • This is a bunch a jiberish to me. I am the Granddaughter of the "deceased" as you put it. These pictures belong to my mother who is the "deceased"'s only child. They belong in my family album and are also being reprinted in my mother's biography of her father being published as we speak. So what would be the correct, i dunno, classification to post the pix on wikipedia??Jinanez 10:32, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
    • Plus, the pictures are over 30 years old and i dont see why i need anyone's permission to post pictures of my own grandfather. Do you need permission to show people your family album? Also, who knows who the hell is the photographer of what picture? it could be my mother, my grandmother or anyone of my family or even an outsider. The pictures are in my family album therefore they have been released to my family.Jinanez 10:49, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
    • If the copyright classification needs to be corrected than please advise what is the correct classification to do so. Also, i suggest adding more explanation about the different options to picture posters for us copyright dummies. Jinanez 10:57, 24 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think the current copyright classification is fine, I don't there should be any copyright problems with your photos, and that's what I said in that discussion. You can see I added some of the photos to the Hebrew article about the Kataeb that I wrote. I also wrote in about your grandfathers part in the establishment of the militia and about his death.Lizrael 06:39, 25 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
    • Still I have no idea what you require of me. These pictures are actual photographs of my grandfather in my possession. They are not part of any publication as yet but soon will be published in William Hawi's biography written by his only child (my mother). Please clarify your request.Jinanez 09:11, 28 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
  • Hi, I think the problem with the images is that the copyright holder is the person who took the pictures, not the one who possess them, therefore it would in theory be a copyright violation if you released the pictures under any license. It would have to be done by the person who originally took the picture, or by asking the person who took them if it could be released under such license. Funkynusayri (talk) 13:23, 23 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
    • this issue has been solved 1 year ago. My mother and Daughter of William Hawi is the owner of these photos. An email was sent to wikipedia in this regard last year. Thanks for your concern. Jinanez (talk)
  • Ah ok, good! I think the copyright paranoia on Wikipedia gets a little out of hand sometimes... Funkynusayri (talk) 14:12, 23 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Image:1grandpa.jpg listed for deletion

An image or media file that you uploaded or altered, Image:1grandpa.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. Please see the discussion to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. • I have not posted it on the subject william Hawi page so I have no objections if it is deleted.

Hi, thank you for graciously releasing these images under the GFDL. In order to verify the licensing details, could you please forward a letter explaining the situation to permissions-en@wikimedia.org. ˉˉanetode╦╩ 23:51, 19 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • a letter saying what exactly? i really cannot add anything to what i have already said when i was notified that the pix are up for deletion. Jinanez 10:07, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
    • Basically saying the exact same thing you already said in the deletion discussion. I'm sorry if it seems redundant, but e-mail is currently used to verify license permissions by the WP:OTRS team. By sending this e-mail you would dissipate any confusion and, hopefully, prevent these images from being nominated for deletion again. Something along the lines of "I have permission from the copyright holder to release these images under the GFDL". ˉˉanetode╦╩ 10:22, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for File:3intikhabatb.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:3intikhabatb.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 11:41, 25 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Hello! i noticed that the picture in question has been deleted. I thought we resolved the issue of the photos a long time ago. I will repeat then. William Hawi is my maternal grandfather. He was assassinated 34 years ago. All the photos are property of my mother Leila Hawi Zod and she has asked me to post them. This picture in question is in fact a photo of the poster used for the elections of 1952 and it was plastered all over the streets of Beirut. Please advise what additional information you require. File permission problem with File:Josiane el zir.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Josiane el zir.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 09:34, 4 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
