editions on zeteo

Group nav template

The group nav template might look better at the bottom. A lot of the people and chemical navigation boxes are like that. As random examples, Glutamine_synthetase and Edward II of England. I don't know what a good infobox would be. JackSchmidt (talk) 17:12, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

My intention was to cover only the items which show up in this section (basic notions in group theory), which is why I included it at this section. But an additional navbox covering all relevant notions of groups and group theory would also be a plus. If you want, just add one. It should contain something like - set - group - ring - field - as a line, then perhaps basic theorems like - Lagrange, Cayley, Burnside -, then types of groups (similarly to the box at the very top)... zeteo suggestion

Michael Hardy has been asking for journal abbreviations to be expanded on wikipedia. Would it be possible for zeteo to do this automatically? (There is a computer-readable list of journal abbreviations and their expansions here.) R.e.b. (talk) 14:53, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

I was also following this thread. What exactly do you want me to do? At this time, zeteo does have a field for an abbreviated journal name. If somebody happens to add an item with journal name "Ann. of Math. (2)", for example, it will instead use the full name "Annals of Mathematics. Second Series". So this should already work. On the other hand, what I wanted to do, is adding all journals (also mentioned in the thread) to the database including their ISSNs, so that people don't have to add the stuff. But there are also many misspelled names etc. Does this help? I'm currently also thinking of other means, such as scanning all WP articles for these journal templates such as

I hadn't noticed that zeteo was already expanding journal names. I had some sort of vague idea that zeteo might be able to crawl though wikipedia, expanding journal names in citation templates. But I've since realized that this would be more complicated than I thought (and require registering it as a bot and so on). Is there any easy way to use zeteo to polish all the abbreviations in a page such as von Neumann algebras at once other than entering them 1 by 1? R.e.b. (talk) 14:19, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

You can add a series of citations by using the "Add references from a file" function. In your case, paste the WP source code of the reference section, click at "Paste" and add the refs to the database. Once you are done, you can re-export them. But you might check out what zeteo already gives: for example

compared to the one in the article

• Murray, F.J.; von Neumann, J. (1937), "On rings of operators II", Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 41: 208–248

(notice also the en-dash for the page range, the issn, wikilink of the journal and of the author (the latter is probably not necessary in an article about von neumann algebras, though :-). Nonetheless this shows the advantages of a structured storage of reference information). The refs in zeteo are almost all taken from Math WP articles, and if the citation template is older than some 4-5 months, it will already be in zeteo. • Questions like this can be asked over at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical). When you print a Wikipedia page, it does not include the left-hand column, so there must be a way of making that column disappear. EdJohnston (talk) 20:45, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

• I use the "chick" skin. It is lightweight and easy to customize. It starts out kind of ugly and useless, but that is just because they don't force you to override their style. I put the tools I use at the top of the page, and compress the others on the bottom. You can check out User:JackSchmidt/chick.css to see my view. For my work mediawiki, I removed the lefthand column in monobook. This is surprisingly hard to do in a browser independent fashion, because mediawiki has quite a lot of of browser hacks in the monobook skin. In particular, I was not able to do it from a user CSS file. WP:VP/T is definitely a good place to ask questions, especially about special pages. JackSchmidt (talk) 20:52, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks to all of you! Jack, I tried adding your chick.css to my monobook.css which rendered the page hard to use (for example the "edit this page" link was still there, but I could not access it with the mouse) and the content of the left hand column was still there, but in a disordered manner. I undid this and then I tried to created a file called "chick.css" and filled it with the content of your chick.css, but this did not give any change (as I think it should not). Yeah, you want it in chick.css not monobook.css. I might have a monobook.css to kill some of the spam, but I don't update it as frequently as the spammers. You go to Special:Preferences and select the Chick skin, under the "Skins" tab. JackSchmidt (talk) 21:28, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
