I am researching two books on US submarine operations in WWII. I am extracting information on war patrols using several sources and I am finding errors in the DANFS material as posted on Wikipedia. I will submit edits as I find errors.

Midway submarines

Checking the page history, I found that the name of Nautilus's captain was changed from Brockman to Anderson last March by some drive-by vandal. Good catch!

I don't know offhand when the submarines left Pearl for the Battle of Midway, but I vaguely remember something in Prange about the subs. It couldn't hurt to ask on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ships.

Incidently, when you find errors in the online version of DANFS, you can send them to the Naval History Center:

"e-mail your suggested correction to shiphistory@navy.mil.

"Please be advised, however, that requests for research assistance or information sent to this e-mail address will not be answered. All queries of that nature must be sent to the address listed above. All suggested corrections will be reviewed for accuracy. Thanks for the tip about WikiProject Ships. I'll look into it.

As for the DANFS article on the USS Nautilus, it doesn't mention the commander's name so apparently that material was added by whoever ported the material from DANFS.

USS Grayling

I have a Great Uncle(EM1 Homer Smoak,who was lost with this sub. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
