- @Paper9oll Hi. Yes, I'm new to editing, but I have valid reasons as to why I made changes to the name of the actress. She spells her own name as "Shin Hae-sun" rather than "Shin Hye-sun" like it currently is set to on her wikipedia page, and same goes for her own agency and even Netflix. Her signature even shows an "a" rather than a "y". Spelling her name incorrectly is not the right thing to do and for editing pages, is what I would consider as "disruptive editing". If there is proof that she spells her own name with a y, please let me know if I was wrong. Imanomynous (talk) 21:16, 19 July 2024 (UTC)

- @Paper9oll Hi again. So I just took a look at the "reliable sources" page that you linked and I found the "Self-published and questionable sources as sources on themselves" section regarding celebrities and their official accounts. It states that "Self-published or questionable sources may be used as sources of information about themselves", with this also applying to social media platforms like Twitter. She has set it so that her Instagram account, that is verified, shows her name in both English and Korean. She spells it as "Shin Hae Sun", and I view this as a reliable source since it does not break any of the rules regarding the section I mentioned earlier. If the spelling of the actress's name is coming from the actress herself on her official social media account, would I still in the wrong in thinking that this is not a reliable source? - @Paper9oll Hi. I went through and read the Wikipedia:COMMONNAME that you also linked, and even after reading it, I view that the change to the spelling of her name stays valid.
- Digging in, it states that an article's title (in this case her name) generally prefers the name most commonly used in English-language sources (so in this case, "Shin Hye-sun", since it's generally more common than "Shin Hae-sun" amongst these kinds of sources). However, further down it states, "inaccurate names for the article subject, as determined in reliable sources, are often avoided even though they may be more frequently used by reliable sources". This means that in this case, even though "Shin Hye-sun" is the more frequently used name from reliable sources, "Shin Hae-sun" would be the name to use instead, as this is accurate based on her official social media account, agency page, and other reliable sources.
- In addition, the page also states, "When there are multiple names for a subject, all of which are fairly common, and the most common has problems, it is perfectly reasonable to choose one of the others". Since "Hye" is incorrect due to it being the wrong spelling, it would make sense that switching this to "Hae" is the right thing to do. Spelling someone's name not how they want it spelled, is rude, would it not?

To do so, you must initiate a move discussion request by following the instructions at WP:RSPM. You must also provide independent secondary reliable sources in the rationale as evidence that what you're proposing is indeed a WP:COMMONNAME.
