Commonest

edit

Greetings. I noticed your recent edit on Earth, citing grammar as the reason for changing "commonest" to "most common". While I take no issue with the change, I thought you might like to know that both are acceptable. There is no steadfast rule regarding when the "-er/-est" suffixes may be used for comparatives or superlatives, though they are reserved for "short" adjectives. Two syllables is generally considered short enough, but it is a matter of taste as to whether or not there is a preference. Common is one of those adjectives where usage varies. In my own experience, I think I see a suffix less often, but that really does not clearly establish a grammatical necessity. Evensteven (talk) 20:14, 9 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
