Dear Sir, I am Patrick Dougherty´s daughter. My father was from Northern Ireland and a marine engineer. He was in the Royal Navy and he fought in the war. He told us many anecdotes about his experiences there. In the 1950s he went to Africa. Firstly to Nigeria where he spent about ten years. After a brief period back in the UK he went back to East Africa working for EAR&H (East African Railways and Harbours). Eventually that company split up for reasons I cannot explain but my father was determined to continue his work particularly in Tanzania where the dilemma of the Liemba was his main concern. His wife was well aware of his devotion to his work and he was a devoted father and husband, albeit from a distance. He was responsible for putting the Liemba back into circulation on Lake Tanganyika in the late 1970s thus reestablishing a hugely important means of transport in an area which desperately needed it. I was on its maiden voyage myself and the expectation at each port of call was huge. To his last days his work in the Liemba was his pride and joy.
