translatewiki:MediaWiki:Searchmenu-new/ase

edit

Sorry for using your talk page here instead of on translatewiki, but I don't have an account over there, and it's not possible to edit your talk page there without one...

Anyway, I noticed that on translatewiki:MediaWiki:Searchmenu-new/ase, the translation you added includes simple quote marks around the $1. I find that the ""s look a bit strange when the rest of the line is entirely signwriting. Is there perhaps a signwriting equivalent of the quotes that could be used instead? Or maybe the quotes could be left out entirely?

(On a related note, the messages MediaWiki:Parentheses, MediaWiki:pipe-separator, MediaWiki:semicolon-separator, MediaWiki:colon-separator are similarly peculiar-looking when surrounded by signwriting, and I think it would be very helpful if they could also be translated.)

Thanks :) --Yair rand (talk) 15:55, 28 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

That is fine with me. :-)
My understanding was that the quotes were used in Wiki formatting, which is the reason that I left them there. I do agree that it does look weird to see them there, but I honestly don't know what these translations will look like when they are being used. If I am wrong in that the quotes are not for formatting, but I guess I will have to figure out something else to do with them.
I could not find those messages for translation. Where do I find them?
Thank you. I am glad to have some feedback because I feel like I am going at this blind. :-) --Icemandeaf (talk) 20:18, 28 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Double quotes (") are not wiki formatting. You might be confusing it with two single quotes in a row ('') which is for italics. With the quote marks, it looks like this, except above the search results when you search for a page that doesn't exist. Note: You can add ?uselang=qqx to the end of the URL to see the names of the Mediawiki messages in their locations.
The parentheses etc messages appear not to be in the normal lists of messages, probably because most languages don't need them translated. I'm not sure how to access the translating interface for them. Maybe they could be just edited directly from translatewiki:MediaWiki:Parentheses/ase, etc? Is there an edit or translate button there? I've never used translatewiki before, so I don't really know. Sorry. --Yair rand (talk) 00:15, 29 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
My mistake. You are right that they are double quotes rather than two single quotes. I found the actual line that this is being translated from. I will remove them because there isn't a use for them within ASL since quoting is not done with punctuation marks.
As for the other message, I don't see anything that leads me to a translate area. I will have to look into that. --Icemandeaf (talk) 01:39, 29 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. By the way, translatewiki:MediaWiki:Viewprevnext/ase has a similar issue with the brackets.

Looks roughly like this...
Incidentally, I've been working on some JS and CSS over at the Incubator to roughly simulate what the page would look like once vertical text is supported and the ASL interface is available. You can take a look by putting javascript:(function(){importScript("User:Yair rand/signwriting viewer.js")}()) into the address bar over on an ASL page (or any incubator page with ?uselang=ase at the end of the url). It doesn't work in Firefox, unfortunately. --Yair rand (talk) 00:53, 5 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
You are correct about translatewiki:MediaWiki:Viewprevnext/ase. I was confused how all the parts were used, but I understand it better. I have corrected them with the correct brackets.
Your javascript looks very impressive. It is nice to see how this work will be applied. -- Icemandeaf (talk) 01:11, 5 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
