Using elevation to define lakes as "alpine"

edit

It seems like the literature refers to many lakes as "alpine" well below 2700 m. For example, alpine lakes in the Alps may be as low as 500 m above sea level. A better definition probably refers to mountain geography, water sources, etc. Kw9793 (talk) 23:13, 8 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

UV avoidance by algae at high altitude

edit

Anyone else come across this in their readings? Apparently deep primary production is a feature of clear alpine lakes, seems like it could be a unique thing to add. Kw9793 (talk) 19:24, 14 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

yes! I've come across this! I'll make sure to try to add something in invert ecology section. Do you happen to know the exact paper you saw this in? Breitkrl (talk) 23:38, 16 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
The paper I read that mentioned it cited a review article on UV radiation in alpine lakes: Sommaruga, R. 2001. The role of solar UV radiation in the ecology of alpine lakes. Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B: Biology. 62. 35-42. Kw9793 (talk) 22:43, 21 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
