Hello there, you are probably clicking on my page because I edited a wikipedia page by changing the name back to Port Elizabeth/Uitenhage So yeah, I live here and im part of the JCC so im heavily involved with what happens in our City

Here is the actual reason I keep changing it back to Port Elizabeth though:

The minister of culture and sports (I think thats his title) changed our city, and Uitenhage's names after a council member submitted a vote to change our cities name during christmas break, meaning no one else in the council was there to object it before it got passed. Now the law around changing the name of a city and/or place says you have to hold a public meeting in the place to get input from the community on whether or not they support the name change. What this council member did was hold a meeting, but only invite his one friend to show up, which voted in favor of the name change, meaning, according to polls, Port Elizabeth agreed to the name change

The fact is however, they did not... Which could clearly be seen by the public outrage that was caused which forced the minister into releasing a public statement that there has to be an announcement that the meeting will take place in future meetings. Yet they didnt take it back and apply that law to us, basically sticking us to this name

The wikipedia says its colloquially referred to as Port Elizabeth because literally no one cares about the name change, I have not met one person that calls this place 'Gqeberha'

So yah, until its an actual valid name change that wasnt done in a shady manner I will continue to change any and all wikipedia articles related to Port Elizabeth, back to Port Elizabeth.. You are welcome to leave a comment and we can have a chat but this is where I currently stand on the matter

Incorrect about Port Elizabeth

Hello ILikeTrams,

I just wanted to say I strongly disagree with your decision to keep renaming Port Elizabeth. While we have to WP:AGF, I highly doubt you are actually unaware of what's happening. But, in case you are:

https://businesstech.co.za/news/trending/511554/another-name-change-announced-for-south-africa/

"Name changes are necessary

In February, Mthethwa announced a number of name changes in the Eastern Cape which he said were for transformation purposes.

Some of the most notable changes include:

Port Elizabeth to Gqeberha; Uitenhage to Kariega; King Williamstown to Qonce; East London Airport to King Phalo Airport; Port Elizabeth Airport to Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport. The minister said that the transformation of the naming landscape in South Africa is ‘a critical component of the heritage landscape as a whole’.

“There was a need for the name changes as this is part of a government programme to transform South Africa’s heritage landscape. The names of places we live in reflect the identity and cultural heritage of the people of South Africa,” he said.

Mthetwa said that prior to the changes, the Provincial Geographical Names Committee conducted public consultations on all the names that were changed.

“The South African Geographical Names Act provides for objections within 30 days from members of the public in instances that they are not happy with the gazette name changes,” he said.

So despite what you've written, they did in fact follow proper procedure and get input from the community.

Given that this proves you're wrong, are you willing to move the page to its official name? Desertambition (talk) 00:16, 31 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for replying, I don't really check Wikipedia that often so I only saw the notification now

I just want to reply to this statement (“The South African Geographical Names Act provides for objections within 30 days from members of the public in instances that they are not happy with the gazette name changes,” he said.)

This law was introduced after Port Elizabeth's name was changed, and not beforehand... There are articles that back up what im saying and, I know I cant be taken seriously without siting them, I just dont have the energy to go dig up old articles when I cant even remember who published them

Have a great day

Also, I see on your talk page that you are "anti-racist" yet it seems that you are dismissing any culture that is not Black? Please explain — Preceding unsigned comment added by ILikeTrams (talkcontribs) 09:22, 16 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
