Well, you have to upload an image to Wikipedia in order to insert it in the article, so it doesn't have to be from Wikimedia Commons. To upload an image, I suggest you first read the image tutorial. After that, either search for "Special:Upload" or click "Upload file" in the toolbox on the left side of the screen, and follow the instructions to upload an image. Some images are fair use, which means they are screenshots of a movie or video game, movie poster, magazine etc., and can only be used in the article namespace in articles relevent to an image. To insert an image in an article, simply put [[Image:Image.extension]]. If you want it to be a certain size or have a caption, type [[Image:Image.extension|thumb|(number)px|(caption)]]. It doesn't matter what order you put the "thumb" and "(number)px", but the caption must come last. If you want to link to an image without showing an image, put a colon before the image name ([[:Image:Image.extension]]). — The Great Llama^moo? 14:57, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

You can make templates simply by creating a page called "Template:Whatever". To put its content on a page, type either {{whatever}} or {{Template:Whatever}} (though the former is more commonly used). However, to put another page's content on a page, you don't have to use something in the template namespace; you can transclude any namespace (I don't know how to transclude the mainspace yet, but there's probably a way). To make a template to put on your userpage, create a page called [[User:HubmaN/Whatever]] (replace the "Whatever" with the title you want to use) and put {{User:HubmaN/Whatever}} on your userpage. Request to participate in University of Washington survey on tool to quickly understand Wikipedians’ reputations

Hello. I'm part of a research group at the University of Washington. In April, we met with Wikipedians to learn what they would like to know about other editors’ history and activities (within Wikipedia) when interacting with them on talk pages. The goal was to gather feedback to help design a tool that could quickly communicate useful information about other Wikipedians. We have now created a few images that we feel represent some of what our participants thought was important. We would appreciate it if you took a few minutes of your time to complete an online survey that investigates whether or not these images would be useful to you. Your quick contribution would be very valuable to our research group and ultimately to Wikipedia. (When finished, the code for this application will be given over to the Wikipedia community to use and/or adjust as they see fit.)

We are particularly interested in feedback from new editors! We want to make sure this tool meets your needs.
