Municipalities Project

Hey. I've signed up for the project. I actually got interested today, after reading about User:rambot, and thinking about whether a similar piece of software could be used to populate South African municipal pages with census data (which is publicly available from statssa). One issue if obtaining the data - it's all available at [www.statssa.gov.za], but only via a web interface. I don't think they'd be happy if we used a bot to grab data off there (in fact, their sysadmins would probably just block the ip). Perhaps you know of a public source of census data (that's easily computationally usable)? Otherwise, though, maybe we could ask them for it ...

Also, I wouldn't mind a copy of the scripts you're using to generate the maps. Can you put them on a server? (Otherwise, you can pm me at user oneillkza on Yahoo chat) -Kieran 20:13, 11 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

N1

You're right, that image isn't really GFDL although it is impossible to copyright a map in SA. Could you try re-copying them? Páll (Die pienk olifant) 18:12, 24 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hey. Nice job on the N1 map. I've noticed that the N3 map ([1]) is in a similar state (taken straight off routes.co.za). Do you think you could do the same for it sometime? -Kieran 20:54, 28 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Re: SU name

Thanks for the note. SU has been sharpening up their corporate image, and from the SU corporate identity guide: Sowel die beskrywings "Universiteit van Stellenbosch" as "Universiteit Stellenbosch" is korrek, hoewel die laasgenoemde, meer informele formaat vir bemarking- en kommunikasiedoeleindes gebruik moet word. It is, however, proper Afrikaans to have the "van"; the shorter version is simply to keep it with English, and "markets" more easily, I guess. Thanks for the catch on Chris Brink too, btw. dewet| 18:46, 17 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

South African Bush Telegraph

Hi, if you have not yet done so, we could sure use your input on Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Dewet. Thanks! --Jcw69 16:41, 19 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Htonl, the Africa Award has been proposed as an official award, we could sure use your input at the proposal page - Thank you! --Jcw69 20:23, 23 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Photos

Hello there, since I am working hard to get CT to featured status (like Johannesburg, which I also wrote), I was wondering if you could snap some photos for me. Dewet took some, but his camera isn't that great quality. We definitely need some better photos for the transport section, so here is a photo "wish list"

  • The exterior of Cape Town Station, and perhaps a clearer one of the interior
  • A photo of the M2 or M3.
  • A nice horizontal imge of UCT.
  • A good photo of the skyline or the conference centre
  • A photo of the airport
  • A photo of Newlands Stadium

Thanks! Páll (Die pienk olifant) 04:18, 3 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Cape Town FAC

Well, it's done. I listed Cape Town as a featured article candidate. Take a look on its FAC page and have a vote. Thanks! Páll (Die pienk olifant) 06:15, 13 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Municipal map

Hey there, now that it seems like Cape Town will make it as South Africa's second FA city, I am turning my attentions to Durban. I was wondering if I could beg you to make another beautful map like you did for the Western cape of KZN showing eThekwini/Durban. I would appreciate it greatly! ZA Municipalities template

Hi H! See what I've posted on Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_South_African_municipalities#Templates. My wish is that data may be produced which would fit the Portuguese wiki as well. -- Tintazul 11:56, 20 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Help!

Hey there, I saw this question [2] and was very disturbed. Any chance you'd help me by adding to my reply on the user's talk page? Páll (Die pienk olifant) 21:52, 22 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Job opportunity

Hi there. The organisation funding my studies have a junior developer position opening up. I realise you're probably still in the middle of your degree, so probably won't be available for full time work until the end of the year, but it might be possible for you to get holiday work in the meantime. The work is in bioinformatics, and one of the projects that needs doing is the porting of all the MeSH annotations in pubmed (of which we have a local copy) into a custom made graph based knowledge representation and querying system. From your work here, I would guess that it's something you're more than capable of doing, and, even if you just did it part time, would look good on your CV, and put you in a good position for student funding/work opportunities with the organisation later on. The organisation is based at the University of the Western Cape, so should be within daily travelling distance for you.

Anyway, if you're interested, send a CV to the manager, junaid (at) nbn (dot) ac (dot) za, asking about the junior developer position. If you want to get in touch with me, my email address is kieran (at) nbn (dot) ac (dot) za. I'd be happy to put in a good word for you. -Kieran 19:21, 25 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

SA municipalities, PDF to SVG converter

Thanks once again for the SA municipality maps! By the way, I would be glad if you created the remaining maps, compare pt:ECM with pt:LPM, for instance. And can you please check if the totals on my municipalities table confer, or if I forgot any municipality? 6 metros, 46 districts, 231 locals, 22 DMAs.

I see you've created an ESRI to SVG converter; can you create a PDF to SVG converter too, please? The ones available on-line are not free. I know it can be done using applications like Corel Draw, which I don't own. -- Tintazul msg 09:16, 7 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your work, I realise this were two very tall orders! All the municipalities, plus a PDF converter! I am trying the link you suggested now, let's see about the results.
I have also been thinking of an SVG graphing tool - for instance, to recolour the municipalities on a map of South Africa in SVG format, according to population density, fetched from a text file. This is because I've noticed that in your SVGs all municipalities have proper IDs. This isn't a request ;-) as I've impinged on you enough already. -- Tintazul msg 14:42, 9 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Good! Well, I haven't checked if you have created a map of the whole country with all the municipalities in it, but that would be the map to use. The language data from Stats SA I've sent to Kieran, although he says it's not up to date with the April 2006 changes.

Do you know www.style.org? The guy's into graphs (and the page design is very clean and "efficient", too; quite appealing to engineers and the like.) His Mapping Votes by County provides another way of mapping a fraction of the population to an area map; more interesting, but way more complicated to put into practice as it involves producing a brand new base map, possibly programmatically and by iterations, and intermediate tools like calculating the area of each division as drawn inside the SVG to see how proportionate it is to the division's population. That's the kind of thing I'd like to look into, except we all have our jobs... -- Tintazul msg 12:09, 10 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Corrections to the DMA list

Thank you for checking my table! It seems I have derived my information from outdated sources; an easy think to do, because most sources out there seem to be outdated. That includes en wiki; there is a discrepancy in District Management Areas between the table and the corresponding map, and between that and the maps you've generated.

So, I've been through the Old and NewCodes.xls I've got from Stats SA, and in the Portuguese DMA page I've deleted the following:

  • Eastern Cape: Oviston Nature Reserve, O'Conners Camp
  • Limpopo: Schuinsdraai
  • Mpumalanga: Mdala
  • Northwest: Pilansberg

Let me know if this is correct (naming, that these natural areas are no longer DMAs.) That would bring the DMA count down to 20.

The map Commons:Image:South Africa Districts showing DMAs.png is wrong - it marks the former Northwest DMA.

Also, where is Eastern Cape's exclave in KZN? Was that changed, too, last April or sometime before that? That means all maps styled after Commons:Image:SouthAfricaNumbered.png are outdated. Those were bitmap too, so no big loss, but it means these have to be replaced. I'll take care of that on pt wiki. Areas and population should now be wrong, too; do you have updated sources?

I see you've overwritten my information on Commons:Image:WCDMA03 locator.svg. You had missed another DMA, so I'm uploading it without any info, please overwrite it as well: Commons:Image:NCDMA09 locator.svg (Diamondfields). -- Tintazul msg 11:40, 12 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Local muni maps

I see you've done these (png files) for the WC. Great! Are you planning to do the rest? --Uxejn 21:19, 12 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Crime in SA

Thanks for reinforcing my suspicions regarding sock-puppetry by removing the offending crimexpo paragraph in the South Africa article. ALways good to meet a fellow SA-Wikipedian!

Cheers for now,

Cape Town Image

That Cape Town flag is again faced with a problem. Someone has put the unsourced tag on it. I am not sure what to do here. Please help! -- Chris Lester talk 15:50, 22 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hey

Just thought I'd drop by. Nice work with that Table Mountain fire. Or was that you? Lol I clicked on a lot of user names so I don't know. But anyway hi. --Adriaan90 16:54, 9 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

UCT

Hi - I saw you go to UCT and thought you might be interested in the UCT userbox I created. See my user page for the code and to check it out. If you know any other UCT students, feel free to pass it on. Cheers,Jason Lionchow 18:45, 23 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Glad you like it. I saw all the category work you did for it. Thanks! I have to admit though, I have no idea what and Ikey is! Do you? I'm not from South Africa though so maybe its one of those kind of things where you have to be from here to get it. Cheers, Jason Lionchow 18:05, 25 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Haha, I'm comfortable being an Ikey, just didn't know I was one. So do you know how the name "Ikey" originated? All I know is we have "Ikey Tigers"... and being a comp sci student with a Wikipedia account, what do I know about rugby and whatnot? - Phorque 21:18, 25 September 2006 (UTC)Reply
