Signal box edit

Thanks for the message. Yes, I did remove the link to Highams SB from the Signal box article. This was because in my view it was advertising a particular signal box whereas the article is actually about signal boxes in general. I agree that there are other external links to particular boxes, but there is an argument that these should probably be removed as well (see article talk page) but I didn't feel bold enough to do that while a discussion was still on-going. So I just made sure that the article didn't get any more external links to particular boxes. Links to web sites that talk about "signal boxes in general" are good. The problem is that this article couldn't really support having a link to EVERY signal box preservation group and EVERY heritage railway with info on preserved boxes. Also what about links to existing newer boxes (eg. Reading)? Eventually there'd be far too many external links. If a particular box is notable, it should have its own article - then an external link there would be appropriate. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, not a place to advertise particular groups. I hope this helps. I won't remove the Highams link again just now (to avoid an edit war), but I'll keep an eye on whether the discussion about the external links gets anywhere. -- MightyWarrior (talk) 02:17, 20 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
