List

For what purpose? Rich Farmbrough, 02:58 4 December 2008 (UTC).

Uncategorized

Why are you making edits like this? That user already has 9 categories listed. Also user talk pages are not normally put in a category. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 05:25, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

that is a category inside a category that i will use for my bot when and if it gets approved. did you read the category. ill make it hidden
It did at the time but no longer does. The thing I'm curious about though is why it's being added to pages that already have categories, Category:Uncategorized? CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 06:06, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
it holds pages that im too lazy to add their categories to the pages category. i put categories in pages then will run a bot through pages using recurrent category mode to catch all pages in pages and its subcategories etc. from now ill put talk pages in the category talk. they're now hidden categories now and i moved it to the talk category is that why.

Hello Hintss - it seems like you or the bot is building up an infrastructure that requires tagging n number of pages with . While it is a hidden category, the generic nature of the category name (hence the number of disambiguations at Page) does not convey much information about why it would be on a given category that has nothing to do with the concept of Pages. On such pages, it can easily be construed as mistake, miscategorization, etc. Suggest something more specific to your task, such as . Either way, I'm not finding much precedent for a bot adding meta information to the article space on so many articles as this. Troubling, but good luck with it! Cander0000 (talk) 06:57, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

I am manually bulding up this category of pages using hotcat. my goal is to build up a list that consume all categorized articles on wikipedia. then i want to feed it to hintssbot and SLMSBot in recursive category mode if and when they get approved. that way ill build up a giant list of pages to do find and replace work.
Excellent! The thing is, it seems that many of your stamped in are going to be reverted as it's not usually clear why it applies to any particular article. Differ this from maintenance categories such as , , or other ones generated by the templates at: Wikipedia:Template_messages/Cleanup. Other editors might disagree with you as to the need, but the category does say, somewhat specifically what you believe the problem to be. It seems like your're on the right path with hiding the category, or moving it out of the main article space altogether somehow. Cander0000 (talk) 07:17, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
No, manually adding a category to every single page is certainly not the right way to get a list of every categorized article. Its probably about the wrongest possible way actually. Its not at all clear what the proposed bots are supposed to be doing or if they will even be approved. Please stop building infrastructure for this. You really need to clarify what these bots are supposed to do before anything will happen. Mr.Z-man 08:23, 4 December 2008 (UTC)
Uncategorized has a specific meaning and use - you may break stuff if you ad it explicitly. Rich Farmbrough, 14:02 4 December 2008 (UTC).

Categories and pagelists

Really you want a list of all pages on WP. This is at special:allpages.

Alternatively you could look at the category structure. All articles are in a category tree.

In your current "pages" category for example

   *
[+] Computer stubs (15) In cat Wikipedia administration
   *
[+] Content portals (2) Maybe In cat Wikipedia administration

E

   *
[+] Electronics (38) In cat Wikipedia administration

G

   *
[+] German military personnel of World War I (4) In cat Wikipedia administration

H

   *
[+] Hidden categories (2,541) In cat Wikipedia administration

O

   *
[+] Overpopulated stub categories (13)In cat Wikipedia administration

P

   *
[+] Parent categories (669) maybe in cat Wikipedia administration
   *
[+] Portals (20) maybe In cat Wikipedia administration

R

   *
[+] Redirects (78) maybe In cat Wikipedia administration

S

   *
[+] Stub categories (6,484) In cat Wikipedia administration

T

   *
     [+] Talk (0)  ???

T cont.

   *
[+] Technology (42) In cat Wikipedia administration
   *
[+] Technology stubs (15) In cat Wikipedia administration

U

   *
[+] Uncategorized (0) In cat Wikipedia administration
   *
[+] Uncategorized pages (4) In cat Wikipedia administration

W

   *
[+] Wikipedia administration (60) Is cat Wikipedia administration
   *
[+] Wikipedia maintenance (88) In cat Wikipedia administration

So Cat:pages looks a little redundant.

There is no need in general to target user pages and talk pages for cleanup. In fact it is a bad idea.

Please sign your posts on talk pages with 4 tildes ~~~~.

Empty category

These edits are disruptive and a waste of your time and the editor who has to revert it. The thing is that most editors will expect the Category:Uncategorized to contain articles that have no categories and because you are adding it to articles that have categories then it gets removed. Now the Uncategorized category you created is empty, and as fast as you add to the category, multiple editors will remove it. For articles with no categories the Uncategorized is used and they get put in Category:Category needed. What you are doing needs to stop. Adding that category to pages is going to generate complaints. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 19:46, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

Confused

Seeing you edit to Jackson Township, Monroe County, Ohio, I wanted to ask: what is the purpose of Category:Pages? Nyttend (talk) 23:38, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

Request reason:

I got blocked for timewasting edits en-masse. That was proabably because i was using hotcat to add the category (Page) to as many pages as possible. If i promise not to deal with categories at all except for the category wikiteam could i get unblocked??

Decline reason:

Your reasoning doesn't coincide with your unproductive edits; okay, adding a ton of bogus categories is at least feasible with ignorant usage of HotCat, but I can't for the life of me understand why you would be creating user talk archives for anyone other than yourself, as you did with User talk:Dragons flight/Archive 4 et al. — EVula // talk // // 02:43, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the unblock template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

His talk page was super-long Hintss talk 02:46, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

unblock please

Your request to be unblocked has been granted for the following reason(s):

User was simply over enthusiastic, not acquainted with wikiquette and the category structure.

General comment

Hintss, you seem to have a reasonably quick grasp of the technical side of things, but you are trying to jump in the deep end socially as much as anything. I suggest you look at [1], and see if there's anything there you might take on as a smaller scale project. Other botters will help you if you ask inthe right places.
