Shinto and sumo

edit

Hi guys. Since I heavily edited your contributions to sumo I wanted to explain why I did what I did. It certainly was not my intention to denigrate your contribution, as I think it's valuable that the connection between Shinto and sumo be brought out further. The biggest problem was the placement of the section. It relied too heavily on ideas that are presented later in the article, so to put it at the beginning probably confuses the reader. Much of it needed to be integrated into the parts of the article that already existed concerning what it was talking about; e.g. the pre-bout rituals. (Which I took the opportunity to expand upon.) We also have to organize our collection of information carefully and be consistent with our terms. For example, the place to give details on the distinctive yokozuna dohyo-iri wouldn't be here, but at makuuchi#Yokozuna. Note too that the rope he wears is actually called a rope (tsuna, 綱) -- this is where the name of the rank comes from (横綱) -- and not a shimenawa (注連縄). This also helps keep reader confusion down, and makes it easier for him to avoid reading about the same things over and over again.

Many congratulations and thanks for citing your sources! Doing that really improves the quality of the article, and more sources are always welcome. But please be careful with your citation style. I fixed the one to the Reader paper. Use {{cite web}} when the source is actually a website. A paper that originally appeared in a journal should be cited with {{cite journal}}; one that was presented at a conference with {{cite conference}}. It may well be that your school provides access to online copies of papers, but bear in mind this isn't generally true. If you include the DOI, a link is created to the online source anyway. (Also see WP:EL#Links normally to be avoided.)

We also need to be careful with style. This being an encyclopedia, we unfortunately do not get to wax lyrical in our prose no matter how enthusiastic we are about a subject. See WP:BETTER#Information style and tone. It's good to be concise!

I don't know if your class assignment mandates that all your group's work be done under a single account, but if not please consider creating individual accounts for yourselves. You might decide to stay on as editors after your class is finished after all, and it's easier for other editors to talk to individuals rather than a group if some discussion is needed.

If you need to submit examples of your specific contributions, this can be easily done by linking to a "diff". All edits are preserved in the article history, and are easy to retrieve. Click on the history tab to see it: a dated chronological list of all edits to the article from the very beginning, and the name of the user who made them. Notice the pair of radio buttons in front of each entry. To show what exactly your edit consisted of, select the left-hand button of the version just before your edit, and the right-hand button of your edit, then click on the "Compare selected version" button at the top of the list. You'll get a "diff" showing the changes you made. Just copy the URL from the location bar to link to that exact comparison. Here's an example from your edit to sumo: [1] Note that I compared the version before your first edit to the version after your second one, which summarizes all the edits in one display. The versions you're comparing don't need to be adjacent. This means that you don't have to place all your edits into a single section of the article in order to show what they are.

Also, please consider joining WikiProject Sumo, where we are coordinating development of sumo-related articles. Your help in all areas would be greatly appreciated. TCC (talk) (contribs) 23:38, 3 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
