Allele
I understand why you edited the "allele" entry but there's a history that you may not be aware of. Most people think that alleles are restricted to genes and that was the way allele was defined in the article up until last year. The editors quoted numerous popular articles and standard dictionaries in defense of the old definition and they strongly resisted my effort to change in definition (see Talk).
That's why we added a direct quote and that's why we pointed out that the scientific definition, as described in textbooks, differs from the popular misconception that alleles are only found in genes. I think you should have left the article the way it was in order to make a stronger case for the average reader who may not understand that alleles can be found at any locus. - Thanks, my edit was stylistic, I wasn't going to insist that alleles could only be genes, but I didn't realise there was such history, and actually I'm not sure if the difference is due to defining gene in different ways. The problems I had with the previous wording was the vague reference to "as described in leading textbooks on genetics and evolution", which seemed like an unnecessary appeal to a poorly defined authority. I don't see wording like that in other articles. Then the direct quote, which just seems to be repeating what has already been said, as well as defining "locus" which isn't the topic of this article; and it's a textbook which I can't even access to check it or read more. What I'd suggest is saying something more explicitly that alleles can be "non-coding genes", although reading the Definitions section in the gene article, there's a bit of confusion / controversy. ghouston (talk) 22:58, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
