Did you know that under Communism: (a) the Soviet Union did more to imrpove the education, welfare and culteral resources of its individual citizens than any other nation in the 20th century? (b) That for the first time in Chinese history 'famine' did not mean large populations dead of starvation?

I wish that were true...

Human beings who are happy and content do not make changes: human beings who are discontent and hungry do. Your blanket statement about "fertilizer" actually applies to the Czarist government of Russia before the October Revolution: they had just made mincemeat of most of their armed forces during WWI and were doing nothing to alleviate the horrible conditions within their own borders. And have you read about the "War Lord Era" in China?

I am not a big fan of Communism or Nazism or any other kind of "ism": any totalitarian regime, no matter how well it starts out, winds up as a medium for abuse of power by a small elite.

It's the same way feudalism got started in Europe: the chaos was so bad, people decided it was better to have ONE bandit/overlord who would at least protect them from all the others.

And in the final analysis, all governments of whatever description are controlled by small elites.
