AfD nomination of Salt Spring Air edit

I have nominated Salt Spring Air, an article you created, for deletion. I do not feel that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Salt Spring Air. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. Brianga (talk) 00:01, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Repost of my comment at the AfD page: I recommend taking a look at the following policies or guidelines: Reliable sources, Conflict of interest, Original research and Notability (organizations and companies). There are currently two "References" sections in the article. The first consists of links to Wikipedia articles, which are not reliable sources for an article. The second References section lists an IMDb page, which is also not a reliable source. The other two articles are reliable sources, but they do not provide significant coverage of the subject. They're not enough to establish notability by Wikipedia standards. "Notability" in general is very relative, and your company might very well be notable within a certain locality and in certain people's minds, but "notability" within the Wikipedia context has a very specific definition, and the company does not yet meet that definition. I presume you are the proprieter of this company, or at least work for it, so you should review Wikipedia's guidelines on conflict of interest. It's usually not a good idea to edit or start an article about a company you own or work for, since this can lead to articles becoming advertisements, violations of neutrality policy, or a temptation to view the subject as more notable than it actually is (by Wikipedia standards), thus creating an article that doesn't really belong here. Finally, the article contains information that is not confirmed by the two reliable sources cited. Perhaps you know this information personally, but without a reputably published source to back it up, it shouldn't be included in the article. That's original research, which is prohibited on Wikipedia. More data and pictures won't save this article--proof that it is notable (significant coverage in multiple, reliable, secondary sources) is the only thing that can do that. As for the wikification issue, you can learn by clicking "edit" on certain articles just to take a look at what the markup looks like (do not use real articles, however, to test things out). You can then go to the sandbox and do some experiments to get familiar with how editing using this markup works. Nick Graves (talk) 18:06, 25 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I've added the picture you uploaded to the articles for Ganges, British Columbia and Saltspring Island. Nick Graves (talk) 18:35, 25 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

first thanks for fixing my picture upload, second this is my post that i have just put on the saltspringair page 'comment: thank you for the feedback, I have read through your response, and I am currently playing around in the sand box to pick up some wiki skills. I am not the proprietor or an employee of the company, my interest started because I can see the float planes landing form my window, I have (it’s a small island) got to know the owner and the company. Hence the pet project. I can see that being an acquantance of the owner may be on the fringe of the wiki conflict rule, but on an island this size the most knowledgeable about any island subject is probably somebody form the community. I understand more pictures and data won’t be the saving grace, but new/more articles may be. Salt Spring Air is being honoured with a life savers award this Friday and that is to be picked up by TV and Print media, Salt spring Air’s planes are pretty famous they have each been involved in block buster movies starring Nicholas Cage and Al Pacino (not both in the same movie) I am digging out the reference to those now. In the interest of trying to improve the article enough, could anybody point out the difference between it and say other companies in the same field i.e. harbour_air--Flymebc (talk) 21:58, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

comment i have added more points of intrest to prove notability and added reference points, more to come this weekend after the airline is awarded the medal of honour for life rescue.--Flymebc (talk) 01:14, 27 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hi Fly. If you wish for the people who participated in the Salt Spring Air AfD discussion to take note of your changes to the article, you should post at that page and let them know. It would be a good idea to contact them directly on their user talk pages too. I've taken a look at the recent changes, but I really don't see what I would call significant coverage. Is there an article in a trade magazine that dedicates a whole article to the company? That would help your case quite a bit. Nick Graves (talk) 00:21, 28 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Nick, thank you for that tip, i am learning more every day, i will post on that page now, i am working on pulling more external article together, this came out yesterday more on the award will be in the vancouver press this weekend

Dated cleanup tags edit

Hi, thanks for your message, SmackBot does not generally add tags, but merely dates those that are already there. Regards, Rich Farmbrough, 22:58 28 March 2008 (GMT).

I was the one who tagged it--not because it contained original data, but because it contained Original research, by Wikipedia standards. I'll give you an example. The article currently reads: "St. Clair still puts islanders first, on early morning flights, so as not to wake his neigbours St. can still be seen paddling his surf board out to his waiting plane." That's not supported by any of the sources cited. Perhaps you personally know it because you have witnessed it. But if it's not covered in the reliable sources (as defined by Wikipedia guidelines), then it shouldn't be reported here. If you would like to create an article that includes information about the company that you know personally, but that you cannot support using reliable published sources, you might try Wikinfo, which welcomes original research. Nick Graves (talk) 02:44, 29 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I went ahead and created the article over there. Check it out. Nick Graves (talk) 03:02, 29 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

'Request' hi nick thanks for creating that article on wiki info, most helpful. I have removed the original research connected to the owner paddling his surf board to the plane, is it ok for me to remove your banner warning that indicates the site has original research on it now --Flymebc (talk) 01:00, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Fly. You don't need my permission to remove the banner, but thanks for checking. If you think all of the original research is gone, feel free to remove the banner. Best regards, Nick Graves (talk) 11:32, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

We look forward to welcoming you to the project! -Canglesea (talk) 19:22, 29 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Congratulations edit

Congratulations on successfully defending Salt Spring Air from deletion. I am sure that your efforts to find sources were directly related to this outcome. The article is much improved from the time when it was originally nominated for deletion. As you continue to maintain it, keep an eye out for published coverage so that the article can be further expanded. Don't forget that whatever information is put in the article cannot just be based on personal knowledge, but must be supported by reliable sources cited within the article (I know that can be difficult, and it took me a while to get used to limiting my contributions this way, but it's a "necessary evil" in a project such as this). Well done! Nick Graves (talk) 20:33, 31 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • Cheers, now with hands-on experience defending an article in AFD, you're now much better than the average newcomer. Wish you a nice future on Wikipedia. --Deryck C. 04:38, 1 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • I'm glad this has been a positive experience for you. Your plan to contribute to other gulf islands articles sounds great! Happy editing! Nick Graves (talk) 00:17, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

query on edit edit

hi nick I noticed, if I am reading the history correct, sorry if I am not, that you made a recent change to the article, with regards to a comment about; St.Clair Mccoll experience float pilot being in a movie as a float plane pilot. Did you alter this because you thought the article held insufficient evidence that he was an experience pilot or that he was in the movie. I only ask so I can add extra data to the relevant point, would these links serve as sufficent experience and [1] or the movie not from same source and [2] and [3]

Hi Fly. The best way to contact me is on my talk page (it's linked in the history for each article I've edited). I do not normally check other users' talk pages for messages addressed to me. I deleted the information because it was based on what I believed to be an unreliable source. It has since been re-added using a source from the Variety website. Also, it is acceptable to cite the credits of the film itself for such information, if you happen to have access to a copy.
On another note: Do you happen to have a photograph of McColl that you own the copyright to (that is, that you took yourself) and that you wouldn't mind uploading to Wikipedia? If so, that would be an excellent addition to the article. It would be a good idea to get his permission before uploading it, though I do not think that is technically required. Thanks. Salt Spring Air edit

The reference you were using for the fleet size appears to be a bit out of date. So I used this which is current and gives a fleet of 3 for "Salt Spring Island Air". Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 05:41, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: Salt Spring Coffee Co. edit

Sorry I haven't responded to the message you left on my talk page, I have been focusing my efforts on the Simple English Wikibooks. I did manage to work on the article on the Coffee Company and I did re-start it. It's still in existence, but now that you mention it, I could probably expand it even more. Congratulations on the Salt Spring Air article, by the way! -Thereen (talk) 05:03, 17 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
