Well, I think you could just paraphrase bits of the cyclingnews article without taking it verbatim, since there are certainly other sources for this information (e.g. various european sporting newspapers). Then it wouldn't be a copyright violation. You are right though that the basic story is there already, but I don't think anyone could complain about more details, if you'd like to add them.
