Go versus go

Hi Enrique. I was going to revert your edits to Go (game), but somebody beat me to it - see their reasons, here.

Basically, it's been raised many times before. The article has had Go rather than go for many years and, whenever anybody suggests decapitalising it, there are many editors raising objections to that, with various arguments.

The last attempt was this one but no consensus was reached to change the status quo. Feel free of course to add your view at that discussion section, but there'll be voices dissenting against your suggested change.

First of all my apologies for intruding on grounds that are obviously already taken by others.

And thanks for the interest you seem to take in me.

I'm not even a native English speaker. I just looked up 'go' in an English dictionary and thought: "either they know better than many go players or at least they set a standard which can be followed safely". But I didn't read the discussions and apparently in this medium other factors take precedence. So I'll refrain from meddling any further.

As for the arguments of other editors which you pointed out to me, none of the proponents of capitalization convinced me. The use of the word go instead of Go in an article about go should confuse no one I should think.

The reason I take your time is to ask you if you know if there are cases like this where a consensus is ever reached? I'm all for consensus but I should think that as long as we haven't reached it we could have a —- temporary —- solution by using some independent authority like OED or such.

Thanks for the reply, kind words & your query.

Firstly though, you were absolutely right to do what you thought best - they always say Be bold. We all learn more about Wikipedia (WP) that way! It's absolutely not the case that one is ever "intruding on grounds that are obviously already taken by others", as WP has no concept of ownership of articles; you and any editor are most welcome to edit anything you like - just that if there might be mixed opinions, it's safer first to use the article's Talk page to seek consensus for a proposed change.

I have to admit that I'm swayed to favouring the capitalisation, as I'm a proof-reader for the British Go Association's quarterly journal, which is up to #169, and has always capitalised the word. But other publications do too - and some don't! I accept that this isn't itself a compelling argument, but I wonder if it's worth the trouble to change the 'established' (but not set in stone) pattern - which is used (inconsistently) in many WP Go articles - do have a browse at some in the box I've taken the liberty of putting alongside here.

Whilst I take a contrary view to yours, I do think you should add your opinion here, and maybe consensus will one day be seen to be reached.

Consensus is often reached on many matters; please see for example Wikipedia:Consensus#Consensus-building if you have time to follow some of its links.

My interest in another editor is based on what I see as good and common WP practice, so do feel free to run any WP thing past me (maybe on my own Talk page, if unrelated to this discussion).
