Question from XrayNinerBravo (21:26, 24 April 2024) edit

Hi there, Sir! I am XrayNinerBravo, and you have been assigned as my mentor. How, in your personal experience, do you write in "encyclopedia grammar"? That is, how do you write good articles with grammar all can understand with unbiased views? --XrayNinerBravo (talk) 21:26, 24 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @XrayNinerBravo, welcome to Wikipedia!
I found that it's something that I learnt along the way, Wikipedia has a lot of policies and guidance regarding editing and the style of writing. Some great resources are WikiProject Grammar, the Manual of Style (policies and guidelines for writing), and there's also a tutorial on how to get started on the Wiki. If you'd like to send me an example edit/page you're looking to do I'd be happy to provide some feedback. With regards to unbiased views, WP:RS is the place to go - I'd recommend reading that first.
Hope this helps, Encoded  Talk 💬 16:07, 25 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your help! I'll be sure to take a look at it. XrayNinerBravo (talk) 16:45, 25 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
No problem! If you have any other questions please feel free to send me a message! :) Encoded  Talk 💬 07:20, 26 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the help. But another question I have is if I take a picture of something that is copyrighted or trademarked can I use it on wikipedia? Diapragm (talk) 14:24, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
It would depend specifically on what it is.
For example, if it's just an picture you've taken of a logo that would be copyrighted, if it's a picture you've taken of a logo on a building where the building is the main focus point that's (probably) fair use.
You are able to upload copyrighted content in specific circumstances, the policy regarding that is available here.
Do you have a specific example you'd like me to take a look at? This isn't my area of expertise but I'm happy to advise.
Thanks, Encoded  Talk 💬 16:22, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from Diapragm (13:49, 27 April 2024) edit

Hello, I'm trying to add a picture for the Natural Bridge Caverns in San Antonio of the caverns themselves in the infobox. Right now it only has the logo and I can't find an image of the caverns in Wikimedia. I have multiple pictures of the caverns that I took that I can use, but I'm just wondering how to upload them and how I can use them? And also how does the citation work when I took the picture versus if I find it on the internet? --Diapragm (talk) 13:49, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, you can upload images at WP:UPLOAD.
All images used on Wikipedia need to be under a license that we accept so that legally we can use them. If you took the image, you can decide the license yourself and use it freely wherever. If you didn't take the image, it'll need to aleady be under one of the accepted licenses. The file upload wizard I linked at the start of the message will run you through the entire process and add the required credit / license info to the picture, you can decide how you're credited and it'll show up when the image is clicked on.
You can use images anywhere like this: [[File:Example.jpg]]. There's an image button in the visual page editor which is much easier to use.
There's some examples of images I've uploaded here. There's 1 on there I took myself, the rest are from credited external authors.
Hope this helps, and if you have any further questions please feel free to send me a message. Encoded  Talk 💬 23:10, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from Syringe Tiger (15:10, 27 April 2024) edit

Hello, what's a mentor? How can I become an administrator? --Syringe Tiger (talk) 15:10, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, a mentor is someone who helps newcomers to the website with any questions they have.
To become an administrator:
You must have years of a good edit history that shows you understand Wikipedia policies, have good judgement, a good temperament, and have a need for the administrator toolset. A nomination is then made at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship where the community decides if the user deserves the tools. Honestly, you can do 95% of tasks on Wikipedia without being an administrator. (Quote from WP:ADFAQ#BECOME)
Hope this helps, Encoded  Talk 💬 22:52, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Suppose a very grumpy user has been promoted to administrator. By his grumpy attitude, what might they do? Syringe Tiger (talk) 15:58, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry I'm not sure I understand your question. Encoded  Talk 💬 16:23, 30 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Okay, nevermind that... Are you a bot? Or a human user? Syringe Tiger (talk) 10:48, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
I’m a human :) Encoded  Talk 💬 20:25, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Happy to hear it... Syringe Tiger (talk) 04:11, 2 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Wait, you seem to be happy too. Syringe Tiger (talk) 10:52, 2 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Why're you happy that you're human? Syringe Tiger (talk) 10:52, 2 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
That's an unusual question, why wouldn't I be? I tend to sign of messages with smilies every now and then. Encoded  Talk 💬 22:02, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from Havardperson (22:24, 27 April 2024) edit

Hi my mentor Lew, I am join Wekipedia member at now.

I have one question for edit Wikipeida, If occuring conflict with other member by reason of edit, which reaction i need for cleat conflict with other? --Havardperson (talk) 22:25, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, there's a number of ways to resolve conflict on Wikipedia. You should always start with option 1 and work your way up if necessary.
1. Discussion on the talk page / third opinion.
2. Specialised noticeboards.
3. Request for comments
4. Dispute resolution
You can learn more about dispute resolution at WP:DR and file a request if needed at WP:DRR. If you need any more help or would like me to help with a dispute please let me know.
Hope this helps, Encoded  Talk 💬 22:57, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Collen Mashawana article edit

Hi there, can you please check the Collen Mashawana page if it's written on neutral standpoint and kindly tag it for speedy deletion if it does not meet the 5 pillars of Wikipedia. I think this is a paid article.Bobbyshabangu talk 16:23, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I'm unable to look at it right now but I've set a reminder and will have a look later today or tomorrow. I'll message back here when I've checked it. Thanks, Encoded  Talk 💬 16:26, 28 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi, there's not a speedy deletion criteria that this would match, and I think it is far more constructive to improve the article rather than delete it. I've tagged it for cleanup due to cite overkill, do you have any evidence that it may have been a paid article? If you do, I'm happy to tag the article and action on that. Thanks, Encoded  Talk 💬 08:36, 29 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from Syringe Tiger on User:Syringe Tiger (03:54, 3 May 2024) edit

What kind of protections are there? --Syringe Tiger (talk) 03:54, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

I’m assuming you’re asking about page protection, in which case the most common are semi, extended, full, interface, and template. There’s other less common ones too, there’s a full list and explanations of what each of them are over at WP:PROTECT hope this helps, Encoded  Talk 💬 07:50, 3 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
