Shostakovich

Hi, could you shed any light on the following sentence from a book about Shostakovich? It was only towards the end of 1965 that his condition was successfully diagnosed... as a form of poliomyelitis which affected the nerve endings and the bones. I've had a look at the three kinds mentioned in the polio article, but I'm not much the wiser. Thanks, Mark¹ 04:58, 3 August 2005 (UTC)

Hi Mark... that sounds like the most common form, spinal paralytic polio. Polio doesn't have any direct effect on the bones, so I'm not sure what that's about, but it definitely affects the nerves connecting the spinal cord to various muscle groups. There are certainly varying degrees of severity, so perhaps the "rare" meant that the disease affected him in a very particular way. (I should point out that I'm not a doctor... I just had occasion to learn a lot about polio for a job I had at one time.) Hope this is helpful! -- Elizabeyth 13:46, 3 August 2005 (UTC)
