hi, I am requesting {{adminhelp}} because I am a volunteer level one systems administrator at a public middle school in San Francisco, California. As part of Software Freedom Day, we were attempting to teach kids about the power of Free Open Source Software, such as MediaWiki. We were not able to get more than 6 kids out of 30 kids to be able to create an account from this IP address. I guess that the filters disallow more than 6 accounts to be created from one IP address to avoid sock puppetry. We have another class tomorrow, 2008/9/18/08. Please let us know how we might be able to get more kids on from this IP address. We are all behind one LDAP server in a Xubuntu lab. You can read about our work here:

  • Christian, please send an email to [1] with the names of the accounts you would like created. However, please send the email from an address provided by the school district. The account creation limit is to prevent abusive users from creating multiple accounts, and since Gmail is free, it can be abused by people to request accounts that will later be used abusively. Hope this helps, and good luck editing. Thatcher 00:24, 18 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Account creator privilege granted

edit

I have granted your account the ability to bypass the daily 6 new account limit. You must be logged in to your own account first, then click here to create accounts for your students. This account creation interface requires that you supply an email address for each student, and each student will receive a verification email with a unique password. It is important that each student have a unique account and password; account or password sharing is not permitted. If you have questions or problems you can post again to the admin noticeboard or use the admin helpme message. Good luck. Thatcher 01:24, 18 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

A note about supervision

edit

Hi, Christian. I'm Kafziel, an administrator here. We're happy to have your school here but I just wanted to drop you a note to encourage the teachers to keep a very close eye on the students as they use their new accounts. The way our system works, if one student is blocked for vandalism then it will most likely result in your whole IP address being blocked automatically. So in your case it's especially important to make sure test edits stay in the sandbox and the articles themselves are only edited in constructive ways. I hope the day goes well for everyone. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Kafziel Complaint Department 03:25, 18 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Editors can also make personal sandboxes for practice and rough drafts by adding a link to the their user pages such as this [[user:Einfeldt/sandbox]] which will look like this: user:Einfeldt/sandbox. Clicking the red link will create a sandbox page as a subpage in the users own user space; they can save changes, make practice edits, and so forth. Thatcher 03:33, 18 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Maybe you can post the students' usernames onto here, so that we can contact you directly to resolve issues instead of an outright block on account (and even avoid IP range block). OhanaUnitedTalk page 03:52, 18 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Possibly useful, but they will also be in his logs. And let's not assume a priori that there will be bad accounts, right? Thatcher 04:04, 18 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

There's a page, Wikipedia:School and university projects, which has some good suggestions for teachers who are organizing Wikipedia projects, regarding how students can best be helpful- there's often more to do improving existing pages than creating new ones, for example. They also track what other schools are doing to improve Wikipedia. I hope you'll forgive our concerns, but as you can imagine, we've had trouble with unsupervised middle-school students creating quite a lot of havoc in the encyclopedia. Still, we know that there's a lot that students can do to make the encyclopedia better, if they get good advice. -FisherQueen (talk · contribs) 16:11, 18 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

ACC tool

edit

Hi there. Just wondering as you have the account creator flag would you like to help out on the Account Creating Tool? If you already have an account then please tell me as your on wiki user name may be set incorrectly. The reason you received this message is because your name is listed here. Please get back to me on my talk page. -·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 17:27, 27 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
