Photos

Hi, how are you doing? If you find a photo at Flickr, to be able to upload it to Wikipedia or Commons it has to be Creative Commons or Creative Commons Share Alike, but not Creative Commons with stipulations like "non-commercial use only." If the photographer has the wrong license, you can always write to them through Flickr and explain that we'd love to use their photo as the representative photo of that subject at Wikipedia (the 8th most visited website in the world), with credit to them, but that they'd need to change the license to CC or CC-SA. More than half the time, they will agree and do so, and I've uploaded many such. Please let me know if you have any questions. Badagnani (talk) 04:17, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia isn't for profit but does engage in commercial partnerships, such as with Answers.com. But anyone may use its content for commercial purposes (or any other purpose) without paying, hence "free." Badagnani (talk) 06:06, 9 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi again - thanks for the message. The best thing I can do is point you to this document which is a content guideline: a generally accepted standard that editors should attempt to follow, though it is best treated with common sense and the occasional exception. My guess is that if the creator of an image licensed for free use is contactable then it would be kind to let them know you were using the image - it is a civil thing to do and will spread some goodwill!
