User talk:David.Throop/Essential fatty acid interactions

Points left to make

  • Popular press sez n-3 is anti-inflamatory, n-6 is inflamatory. But this ignores actions of SC n-6 PUFA.
  • SC n6 puga can elongate to AA, but
    • evidence is contradictory
    • different tissues have variable elongation capabilty. In particular, the neutrophils don't elongate DGLA
    • evidence is that the anti-inflamatory effects of DGLA are much larger than any effect from AA production.
    • effect of linoleic acid is much smaller
  • need to visit all the steps, from
    • storage in cell membrane
    • inflamatory event
    • signal molecule induces triglyceride cleavage
    • free fatty acid
    • COX or 5LO
    • PGEx, 5HPETE
  • Series forms isomers, naming can confuse.
  • Cytochrome P450 products

-- CNS

  • Neurons don't elongate but other cells do.
  • Fraction of the brain lipids that are AA; DHA
  • Relatively little EPA
  • DHA structural in the retina
  • Role of eicosanoids in neural signalling
    • Same messenger and receptors as in inflammation, but a different cause and a different response
  • Asymmetry between n-3/6 in capture
  • Additional rolses of neuroprotectin D, endocanniboids,

Disorders affected by ω-3/6 ratio

edit
  • NIH three strongest evidence A
  • NIH many get B.
  • List the C and D as well.
  • List psychiatric and behavior findings.

Do something with the isoprostanes and isofurans [1] [2] [3]

Effects in the human body

edit
  • Contrast eicosanoid signals to other neurohormones.
  • DHA 'side path'
