My Preferences

edit

Hi DSjersey. Thank you for all your great work on Leonid Mikhailovich Kharitonov, which helped the page greatly towards featuring on DYK yesterday. You wanted information about the "cite" link etc.: here it is (I'm no expert, and the following only represents my own experience).

Click on "My Preferences" at the top of your screen. If you then click on the "Gadgets" tab, you will find the tickboxes for gadgets such as "cite". If you click on its tickbox, then "save" at the bottom of the page - next time you do an edit you will have the "cite" facility at the top of your edit box. I'd suggest checking out all the My Preferences tabs while you are there. I have found the following particularly useful:

Under "Editing":

  • Prompt me when entering blank edit summary
  • Show edit toolbar
  • Show preview before edit box

Under "Gadgets":

  • Navigation popups (REALLY useful!)
  • Hotcat
  • Reference tools (citation)
  • Add editing for lead section of page
  • Open external links in new tab/window

Up to you of course - just letting you know some of the tools I use.

I have not adjusted the inline reference that you are concerned about, as I thought you might like to use it to have a go at using "cite". It's very easy, I promise. Open "edit" on the article page, click on "cite" in the edit toolbar, then (for the inline ref we were discussing) click on "web". You can then write in whatever boxes you feel are appropriate. I have noticed that if you click on the correct position in the edit box for your inline ref, before saving your citation, the citation will go where you want it to go. However if you don't do that just before saving, it will sometimes go goodness-knows-where in the article, and you have to look for it - a feature, I guess.

  • One useful point for later use. If you think you will want to use the same citation in several places in the article, fill in the "reference name" box in the "cite" form. (I'm not sure of its limitations but I tend to use a short, one-word name such as "KharitonovMoscow" or "Kharitonov3"). Then next time you want to use the same ref, you can click on "cite" then "Named references" and you get a drop-down box with your chosen name in it. However the system will only find your named reference if it's in your edit box. So you may need to be using the edit tab at the top of the article, rather than section-edit-links, to get full use of that facility.

Enjoy!--Storye book (talk) 12:04, 14 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re the above non-free media notices

edit

MKharitonov owns the copyright to these, and when uploading them on his behalf you accidentally uploaded them under the wrong license. The licence in each case needs to be replaced by a free licence. If you don't know how to do it, I'll do it next week. --Storye book (talk) 07:51, 26 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sorry I was not able to correct the above licences to save them from deletion, but only MHaritonov is permitted to do this, as he is the one who owns the copyright. It would be possible to get the deletion reversed if he applies for it himself by contacting an administrator and asking for assistance in this, saying he wants to add a free licence cc-by-2.5. Materialscientist would be a good one to ask.--Storye book (talk) 10:09, 5 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
