Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Racehorses

Thanks for your edits to these articles. Some of them improve the articles, but some of the modifications to links have not been explained in the edit summaries. Can you provide rationales for the unlinkings on individual articles, please?  Tigerboy1966  18:30, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

OVERLINK applies no articles which contain an excessive number of links.
It also says that names of major geographic features and locations should not be linked "unless they are particularly relevant to the topic of the article". Whether the subject was foaled in France or the United States is relevant to a racehorse article.
It would also be sort of polite to bring this up at the topic talk page before making so many edits. Tigerboy1966  21:53, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
[1] here you have unlinked Pound (mass) where there is no metric equivalent. OVERLINK if both non-metric and metric equivalents are provided, as in 18 °C (64 °F), usually neither unit need be linked. Tigerboy1966  21:57, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Second point first. I think you will agree that the wording of the guideline suggests that there is nothing wrong with linking a unit of measurement when no alternative unit is given.

I'm not so sure about the first point. I would have thought that the place of birth is relevant to the subject, but I can see that some terms are almost universally understood. How far would you go with this? Would you link New York City, New Zealand, Guatemala, Bhutan? Today's FA links Wales: is that OK? Tigerboy1966  07:50, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

Tigerboy, on the English Wikipedia there has been distinct trend over the past six years to use the wikilinking system more carefully so that the more valuable links are not drowned out by a noisy blue effect. This has accelerated since mid-2009, with a decisive set of RfCs in which the community gave the thumbs down to the formulaic linking of chronological items. To take your examples: New York City, no; New Zealand, probably not; Guatemala and Bhutan, it depends on the context. May I make the point that whenever I see commonly understood place-names linked, I wonder why more care wasn't taken in linking more specifically (History of New York City, Demographics of New York City). This should be done preferably not by deceptively piping to the general term, but by either working the unpiped link into the grammar of the clause or by adding the unpiped link to the See also section at the bottom; either way, the target should be as specific as possible, and readers should know what they're clicking on. Please ask more questions if you'd like more information. Tony (talk) 10:07, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
Chis: I think you are probably right about UK/US etc, but I have a few reservations; I will ask Tony for further clarification. I think I am right about the "pound" thing. The difference between an Imperial and American pound is one part in ten million, and I still can't see a coherent argument for not linking pound. Tigerboy1966  14:16, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
You are right about the US/UK pound difference being insignificant - I was thinking of the pint (which is 20% smaller in the US) and assuming, wrongly, that the same difference applied to the pound. However, it would be preferable to use both Imperial and metric measures in the article, and link neither. Especially for races in countries that normally use the metric system.
