Your recent edit at North Charleston, South Carolina

edit

I have reverted your recent edit at North Charleston, South Carolina. While the census data you inserted may have been accurate, you neglected to provide a reference for it and deleted referenced information with your edit, as well as making an incorrect edit stating that the city was the 3rd largest in the state upon its incorporation in 1972. Additionally, your username indicates a possible conflict of interest in editing this article.

While I've been writing this talk page entry I see that you've reverted my reversion. I ask that you undo this edit and discuss your edits on the article's talk page prior to making more unreferenced changes. Thank you.  Cjmclark (Contact) 17:37, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Potential conflict of interest

edit

Hello City of North Charleston. If you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article North Charleston, South Carolina, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:

  1. editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
  2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors; and
  3. linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).

Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you.  Cjmclark (Contact) 17:53, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Username

edit

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, the username you have chosen (City of North Charleston) seems to imply that you are editing on behalf of a group, company or website.

There are two issues with this:

  1. It is possible that you have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, you must exercise great caution when editing on topics related to your organization.
  2. Your account cannot represent a group of people. You may wish to create a new account with a username that represents only you. Alternatively, you may consider changing your username to avoid giving the impression that your personal account is being used for promotional purposes.

Regardless of whether you change your name or create a new account, you are not exempted from the guidelines concerning editing where you have a conflict of interest. For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. The article in question is North Charleston, South Carolina. Thank you.  Cjmclark (Contact) 18:29, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to Wikipedia. Because we have a policy against usernames that give the impression that the account represents a group, organization or website, I have blocked this account; you are welcome to create a new account with a username that represents only you.

Additionally, it appears your account is intended to be used for the purpose of telling the world about an organization or cause that you consider worthwhile. Unfortunately, many good causes are not sufficiently notable for their own Wikipedia article, and all users are discouraged from editing in any area where they have an inherent conflict of interest, though you may wish to consider one of these alternative outlets. If your username doesn't represent a group, organization or website, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} below this notice. Thank you.  Sandstein  18:38, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

If you want to continue to edit Wikipedia, you also need to agree not to describe your city in promotional language, as you did here back in 2009, and you need to cite your sources, as you have been advised above. See WP:FAQ/Organizations for more guidance.  Sandstein  18:40, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I am the Public Information Officer in the Mayor's Office of the City of North Charleston and was attempting to improve the page. By virtue of my role at the city, I inherently have a great deal of knowledge about North Charleston that can be valuable to this page. What is the best way for me to share and not pose a conflict of interest? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rjohnson wiki (talkcontribs) 18:59, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'll reply on the talk page of your new account.  Sandstein  19:10, 13 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
