Mentoring

edit

Hi Burrisan, sorry for the late reply. Yes, I'll be glad to mentor you. May I know which class are you in? Do you have any questions re. editing Wikipedia? Cheers, Bejinhan talks 06:14, 26 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sure, no problem. When does your class start? Do your classmates have their own accounts? Editing wikis is hard initially, but you'll find it easy once you get the hang of it. =)
Another thing... please sign your messages on talk pages by typing 4 tildes (~~~~). That way, your signature would appear automatically.

Hi Burrisan, below are my comments on the edits.

  • I saw that there were links in the "Numbering of Bills" section. I presume they were meant to be references. References are meant to verify a statement or fact in the article. They shouldn't be copied+pasted into the article as that would be copyright infringement, and copyright violations is treated seriously here in Wikipedia. So, please don't do that. Instead, paraphrase.
  • As for the "Introduction" section, it would be good if you could use inline citations for all those info. They need to be cited so we know where you got them from and inline citations are used in articles because they help us identify which sentence or piece of info was retrieved from where. Also, please be a little more specific. For example, there is this dictionary.reference.com link. When I click on it, I find many definitions and I wouldn't immediately know which is the relevant one.

Were you and your classmates supposed to rewrite the bill article? I hope my comments were helpful. Good try in editing Wikipedia and thanks for signing on my talk page! If you are unsure about anything, please don't hesitate to ask. Bejinhan talks 10:39, 12 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome. What is the assignment? From which class/school are you from? It's alright if you remove the links from the main article now, but don't forget to place them as inline citations later. Also, don't forget to paraphrase the The Definitions of Common Versions of Bills section. Best, Bejinhan talks 02:27, 12 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi Burrisan, Stunner 36, Wiederj, Spartans x 3

  • References links - Use <ref>LINK HERE</ref> for the references links. At the bottom of the page, use a ==References== header followed by {{reflist}} at the bottom of the header. That way the references links would automatically appear at the bottom of the page as it should.
  • Cite web template - If you want to include more info about the ref, such as author, date accessed, title, etc., use the cite web template if it is a link. The basic template would be...

{{cite web |url= |title= |author= |date= |work= |publisher= |accessdate=February 18, 2011}}

...which, when you insert in the info, would look like this in the edit window...

{{cite web |url=http://www.gpoaccess.gov/bills/glossary.html |title=Congressional Bills: Glossary |author= |date=11 July, 2006 |work= |publisher=GPO Access |accessdate=17 February, 2011}}

Insert this template next to the text you want to cite and put in the ==References== and {{reflist}} at the bottom of the page. This is how you inline cite.

For further examples, please take a look at User:Bejinhan/Citeweb for the cite web template and User:Bejinhan/Citebook for the cite book template. The examples I did were based on the basic templates. Other parameters and options are available at the respective Template:Cite web and Template:Cite book pages.

  • Copying and pasting - Do not copy and paste content from another website. That constitutes copyright violation and Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously due to the potential legal repercussions. Paraphrase the content, don't use word-for-word, and make sure the reference link is given.
  • If any of you has any questions, please do not hesitate to ask me.

Hello! I really, really need to know what you guys are supposed to be doing. That way, I can better help ya'll. Right now, I'm completely in the dark of what you all are supposed to do. So, please let me know. TIA! :)

  • When using the cite web template, please close the template by typing in }} If the template isn't closed, a red-color alert would appear at the bottom of the page. I have closed the template.
  • Don't put in {{Reflist}} at the place where you put in the cite web template. You have to put it at the bottom of the page, in the References section. Also, just 1 {{Reflist}} template would suffice.
  • I made a slight change. I removed the code>{{Reflist}} template from the article and closed the cite web template. You can see my change here:[1]
  • Good try in using the cite web template!
