Welcome to Wikipedia!

edit

Dear Bartowcounty11: Welcome to Wikipedia, a free and open-content encyclopedia. I hope you enjoy contributing. To help get you settled in, I thought you might find the following pages useful:

Don't worry too much about being perfect. Very few of us are! Just in case you are not perfect, click here to see how you can avoid making common mistakes.

If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the New contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{helpme}} on your user page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions.

Wikipedians try to follow a strict policy of never biting new users. If you are unsure of how to do something, you are welcome to ask a more experienced user such as an administrator. One last bit of advice: please sign any discussion comment with four tildes (~~~~). The software will automatically convert this into your signature which can be altered in the "Preferences" tab at the top of the screen. I hope I have not overwhelmed you with information. If you need any help just let me know. Once again welcome to Wikipedia, and don't forget to tell us about yourself and be BOLD! Thanks. Ufwuct 21:15, 23 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

The ealier message I left for you was a standard boilerplat message to welcome new users. However, I think it would be helpful to you and in the best interests of Wikipedia quality for you to read the policies mentioned in the welcome message. I can see that you have enthusiasm for the topics on which you edit (and I've left some of your edits intact), and I'm trying to follow the Wikipedia policy WP:BITE. However, some of your edits are unsourced or do not comply with the Wikipedia Manual of style. Also, the another issue has been discussed elsewhere at length: the sourcing of population data based on local bureau estimates. To sum up, these agencies are not in the business of counting people (unlike the U.S Census Bureau) and often have motives to inflate these numbers. To illustrate this, these local estimates are always (in my experience) higher than the U.S. C.B. numbers. These agencies can sometimes be used as a source if they meet WP:RS, but when a higher-quality source is available (the U.S. C.B.), we should use the more reliable source instead.
I can see that you are making an effort to comply with policies as you "learn the ropes", and that is appreciated. Please don't take the length of my posts as harshness: I tend to sometimes type length posts on talk pages (and in edit summaries). Good luck with your future edits. Thanks. Hello. Make sure you provide detailed source and licensing information when you upload pictures. You may wish to look at Wikipedia:Uploading images for more information. License tagging for Image:25374112bartowCH2.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:25374112bartowCH2.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 01:04, 13 November 2006 (UTC)

Image tagging for Image:M-2058.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:M-2058.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia, Bartowcounty11! However, your edit here was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove spam from Wikipedia. If you were trying to insert a good link, please accept my creator's apologies, but note that the link you added, matching rule \bexample\.com, is on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia. Please read Wikipedia's external links policy for more information. If the link was to an image, please read Wikipedia's image tutorial on how to use a more appropriate method to insert the image into an article. If your link was intended to promote a site you own, are affiliated with, or will make money from inclusion in Wikipedia, please note that inserting spam into Wikipedia is against policy. Dubuque, Iowa

edit

I'm not trying to bite or anything, but your recent edits to this article had the tone of a Chamber of Commerce brochure. Keep in mind that Wikipedia has a neutral point of view policy, and Wikipedia is not an advertising service. Plus, I have not seen any sort of a reference to a "Quad States" area that's centered on Dubuque -- a Google search for "Quad States" and Dubuque does not return any relevant links. All material submitted to Wikipedia must be verifiable from reliable sources. Please keep these in mind before doing any more edits like this, as they may be reverted by any editor. Thanks, --Iowahwyman 20:24, 10 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Changes

edit

Hello. In response to your message about my edits to the Dubuque, Iowa, article, I would like to say a few things. First of all, my intention was not to change back the population figures that you have updated for the city, as I would suspect that they are also HIGHER than what the Census Bureau puts out. However, another user, and member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Iowa, User:Iowahwyman, did revert your change (at least twice), so I am not alone in this.

Also, I am not sure if you are a resident of the city or the area, but I am, and I can contend that some of the additions that you have made are not necessarily accurate. Some examples:

  • YOU WROTE: "although it is un-official, many locals consider Dubuque County, Jo Daviess County, Ill. and Grant County, Wis. in not only the Tri- State area, but the Dubuque metro, as many residents in Galena, Dickeyville, and Platteville work in Dubuque"
    • While this may be true in terms of commuting/shopping habits, the CENSUS BUREAU is the only agency with the power to define what is part of the metro, and they (so far) only include Dubuque County. Metros are officially-designated areas, and are specially defined, not open to interpretation. Dubuque's metro is defined by the census bureau here (on pg. 37)
  • YOU WROTE: (about Dubuque) "the growing community's population is expected to surpass 60,000"
    • While I, too, agree that this will happen at some point, there needs to be some sort of verification for this claim, otherwise it is just heresy. One could claim that the city's population has ALREADY passed 60,000, but Wikipedians rely on things which have been documented, not speculation.
  • You listed ALL of the public elementary schools in Dubuque, and while this may be appropriate for a smaller-town article which is much shorter, the Dubuque article has already become quite long (45 KB). (Wikipedia recommends articles not go much over 32 KB). The schools are also listed on the Dubuque Community School District article, which is linked under the Education section of the city's article.
  • Finally, you wrote to me that I was "Calling me "unproffesional" and amateur..."
    • I have NOT called you "unprofessional" or "amateur" or any other name for that matter, ever. I simply want to maintain high standards of quality for the articles which I contribute to, as I am sure you do as well. We can both accomplish this by writing things that we know about, and citing stats when they could be doubt. If you have any questions or comments for me, please leave me another message on my talk page.

Population changes

edit

Estimates can not change out what is factual. Also, you need to tag those with links, but it has to be on a seperate line. Please stop changing out the actual numbers as of the 2000 census.--Kranar drogin 02:22, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

What I am saying is do not change the ones that are currently up there for 2000. You can put up there that "2005 Estimates place the population at 394398."(link). 2005 was just an estimate, it isn't an actual census. Those only take place every 10 years.--Kranar drogin 02:33, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
The way you did Stillman Valley, Illinois was perfect.--Kranar drogin 02:48, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Junta, Georgia

edit

A tag has been placed on Junta, Georgia, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, you can request that administrators wait a while for you to add contextual material. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}} to the article and state your intention on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Downtown Cartersville

edit

Another editor has added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Downtown Cartersville, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Proposed deletion of Dubuque Area

edit

The article Dubuque Area has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unsourced geographical grouping based on WP:OR.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
