Authorities edit

Hi, the parentheses in zoological authorities, as for example at the WSC entry for Desis marina (Hector, 1877) are important (they show a transfer from another genus) and are required in the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature.

Working out synonyms from the WSC is unfortunately somewhat complex as it does not list synonyms, only references to the species in the literature. See the explanation at Wikipedia:WikiProject Spiders/Style guide#Synonyms. In the case of Desis marina, here's my working from the WSC:

  • Dandridgea dysderoides White, 1849: 5 (misidentified) – this is a misidentification, not a synonym
  • Argyroneta marina Hector, 1877 – the first use of the specific name marina so no parentheses used in the name "Argyroneta marina Hector, 1877"
  • Desis robsoni Powell, 1879 – the first use of the specific name robsoni so no parentheses used in the name "Desis robsoni Powell, 1879"
  • Robsonia marina O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1880 – a transfer of Hector's specific name marina to Robsonia, so listed as "Robsonia marina (Hector, 1877)"
  • Desis marinus Pocock, 1895 – this is a transfer of Hector's specific name marina to Desis, but erroneously using a masculine ending, which the ICZN requires to be corrected. It should be cited as "Desis marina (Hector, 1877)" as was done by all later authors. As this is the accepted name, it's not a synonym.
  • Desis marina Lehtinen, 1967 – just a taxonomic reference, not a synonym
  • Desis marina Forster, 1970 – just a taxonomic reference, not a synonym
  • Desis marina Coddington, 1990 – just a taxonomic reference, not a synonym
