Taxation in the United States

edit

In regard to the tax distribution not including payroll taxes, do you have source that discusses that point in more detail. I actually made a similar change myself but then reverted it as I wasn't completely sure what the analysis included. It seemed to be only quoting individual income taxes and I expected that it didn't include payroll taxes (which 75-80% pay more in), estate taxes, gift taxes, or incidence via corporate income taxes. However, the article referenced through me off with the statement "The majority of American families with an income below $40,000 pay no income tax at all today, and many of them also get a welfare subsidy from the Earned Income Tax Credit that effectively offsets much of what they pay in payroll taxes." So, I then reverted myself as I didn't really know what it included - does this statement mean the tax distribution includes payroll or where they just expanding on offsetting effects? If you have more information, I'd like to clarify the tax distribution section a little further. Thanks Morphh (talk) 23:50, 09 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

While trying to research the information, I decided to rewrite the entire thing into paragraph form (since that is preferred per WP:MOS). I also included information on distribution based on wealth, regressive aspects of the payroll tax and corporate income tax. I'm also looking for some good sources to include info on the capital gains tax. Morphh (talk) 2:04, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
