Hi Ashley - I think that Cambodia is a great topic to cover. What draws you to focus on the Khmer Rouge era? I urge you to look at our Global Context database on Cambodia at the library website and see what you find on both topics related to Cambodia. Is there information on youth in this era? What kind of sociological questions might you ask about this historical era? I would enjoy talking with you in office hours on how to get started; I also encourage you to discuss it with Prof. Carrie and, once the topic is more developed, with our online ambassador regarding where to make your contribution on Wikipedia.Prof.Vandegrift (talk) 21:31, 8 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Citing memoirs and monographs

edit

Ashley, there are numerous ways you can opt to cite print books on Wikipedia. This file on [citing references] should help. At a minimum you need author, title, publisher and year. It's common practice on Wikipedia, however, to use an external link to the item's page on Google Books (even if the item is not available in full-text on Google Books.) Let me know if you have more questions. We can also take a look at a specific example if that would help. DrakeLibrarian (talk) 21:39, 13 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Welcome

edit

Hi Ashley. Welcome to Wikipedia! I'm an online ambassador for your Global Youth Studies course at Drake. If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, chat with us on IRC, or ask your question on this page and then place {{helpme}} before the question.

Thank you for introducing yourself on my talk page. I urge you to take a look at childhood and adolescence in Cambodia. Gobōnobō + c 23:24, 21 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

I've renamed the article to Youth in Cambodia. Rather than just adding a section to the article, I would encourage you to consider rewriting, restructuring, and revising the entire article. I believe that most of what's there is sourced from a Library of Congress country studies document dated from 1987 and much of it is poorly written and outdated. A good article on youth in Cambodia will include demographics and overviews of the education, health, and culture-related experiences of Cambodian youth. I think that the influence of the Khmer Rouge and the pressures of globlisation should be taken into account, but it is important to also address the influence of Buddhism.
Regarding photos, I left a response for you over at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Cambodia#Khmer Photo Help. I'm a good person to ask about uploading images if you have any questions.
Completely off topic, but one of my favorite albums is Cambodian Rocks, which is a compilation of 70s Cambodian garage rock. Gobōnobō + c 22:16, 19 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Classmate Feedback

Ashley I think your topic will be fascinating though I am not overly familiar with the literature available, I think it will really benefit from your personal experience. Good luck!KLi 32 (talk) 02:11, 28 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Classmate Feedback

I know I'm late to the game here, but Ashley your topic sounds fascinating, and you seem really excited about it! I don't know much about the topic, but it sounds like you're taking on quite a bit of information. As you go, I'm wondering if you'll need to narrow your focus? Best of luck! Feedback on 3.27 sources

edit

Hi AMT. You have found some solid sources! As you move forward, step back a bit and consider how you will structure a general article on Youth in Cambodia, as per User: Gobonobo's feedback a few weeks ago. I encourage you to look to the reference librarian for general statistics on gender, percent of population, education, health, employment, etc. Because you are starting an article, you have the benefit of being able to work with the basics in addition to the great scholarly article you have found.

I want you and User:Scarlson0921 to have parallel structures in your articles - each "youth in X" article needs to have a similar format.
Keep moving forward - this is a good topic that will yield a helpful article. Prof.Vandegrift (talk) 04:58, 2 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi AshleyMichelleThompson! As a student editor on Wikipedia, you have a lot of valuable experience about what it's like to edit as a part of a classroom assignment. In order to help other students like you enjoy editing while contributing positively to Wikipedia, it's extremely helpful to hear from real student editors about their challenges, successes, and support needs. Please take a few minutes to answer these questions by clicking below. (Note that the responses are posted to a public wiki page.) Thanks!

Articles for Creation

edit

Hi Ashley. I saw that you placed a request for review from Articles for Creation in your sandbox. This isn't really necessary as there is already an article for youth in Cambodia. Feel free to copy your revised version into the article. Let me know if you need help. Gobōnobō + c 22:11, 7 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

I seem to be having issues with making the Lead section of my article. Is there special markup or something I need to do to my first paragraph to make it the lead? AshleyMichelleThompson (talk) 14:30, 15 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
It looks better now. Unlike the other sections, the lead won't have a section header (e.g. ==Youth labor==). Gobōnobō + c 19:35, 15 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
