Collection Manager Article Review

edit

The article is written in a non-biased, engaging style providing readers with a clear understanding of the role a collection manager plays within a larger cultural institution. It is well researched, citing respected authors in the museum field such as Rebecca Buck and Jean Gilmore, professional organizations such as the Museums Association, and cultural institutions like the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

The image of Jill Cook is appropriate to the article; however the caption could have included text stating that she was handing the artifact according to British Museum standards while still meeting Wikipedia’s article criteria for media captions. This information can be found in the image’s description. Both this image and the one of visible collections storage follow the site’s image use policy.

The structure of the article follows a logical progression from a brief definition of the role to expanded information about responsibilities, education, and training. It also includes a well thought out list of ‘see also’ list of other aspects of the work for which collection managers are responsible.

This article on collection managers was very informative, comprehensive, organized, and well written. The lead was a good introduction to what points would be discussed in the article and could be used for a quick reference as to what a collection manager is, what they do, and what their training is like. I also enjoyed the "A Day in the Life of a Museum Collections Manager Video" because it was interactive and gave viewers a visual to complement the text in the article.

One of the strengths of this article was how it referenced how collection managers often must take over the duties of other collection oriented positions, such as a registrar, curator, or conservator-restorer, if the museum does not have one or more of those positions. This helped to provide overlap between different encyclopedic articles about collection roles in museums. The "see also" section also helped to connect this article with other related articles, giving a fuller view of collections management and collection positions in museums. It was great that the writer mentioned how collection managers must interact with people from other departments.

I am no Wikipedia expert by any measure, but did you consider breaking up the "responsibilities" section into smaller sections or subheadings? It is a little text heavy at first look so I am wondering if subheadings might help break up the long passages of text and give the eyes a break. A point that you could consider adding in is how some collection managers might have started out as museum technicians or collection assistants before becoming collection managers.

Great job!!
