Welcome edit

Hello, Analog 9, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Unfortunately, one or more of your edits have not conformed to Wikipedia's verifiability policy, and may be removed if they have not yet been. Wikipedia articles should refer only to facts and interpretations that have been stated in print or on reputable websites or other forms of media. Always remember to provide a reliable source for quotations and for any material that is likely to be challenged, or it may be removed. Wikipedia also has a related policy against including original research in articles. As well, all new biographies of living people must contain at least one reliable source.

If you are stuck and looking for help, please see the guide for citing sources or come to the new contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{helpme}} on your user page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Here are a few other good links for newcomers:

February 2012 edit

Welcome to Wikipedia. Please be aware of Wikipedia's policy that biographical information about living persons must not include unsupported or inaccurate statements. Whenever you add possibly controversial statements about a living person to an article or any other Wikipedia page, you must include proper sources. If you don't know how to cite a source, you may want to read Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners for guidelines. Thank you. --Ronz (talk) 17:39, 14 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Notes:

  1. Please keep your posts signed. I noticed you have removed signatures from your own posts. Please don't do that.
  2. Please don't delete or edit others' talk page messages (unless they are clearly inappropriate).
  3. Please don't use talk pages for random discussion about the topic, as you did on Talk:Apatheism. Talk pages are for discussing how to improve the article.

March 2012 edit

Please stop using talk pages such as Talk:Apatheism for general discussion of the topic. They are for discussion related to improving the article; not for use as a forum or chat room. If you have specific questions about certain topics, consider visiting our reference desk and asking them there instead of on article talk pages. See here for more information. Thank you.   Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to use talk pages for inappropriate discussion, as you did at Talk:Apatheism, you may be blocked from editing. Saddhiyama (talk) 10:14, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sources edit

I see it's already been mentioned above, but please allow me to reiterate. When you add or change information in biography articles, please ensure that you include a reliable source for verification. This is Wikipedia policy, and changes made without a source are often reverted. Thank you, Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 16:06, 21 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

I have reverted almost all of your recent edits as you are still adding unsourced biographical data to articles. Note that WP:RS and WP:V are Wikipedia policies, so please ensure that you state your sources when adding such info. --Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 18:02, 31 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

throughout wikipedia there are numerous articles with unsourced information that has been there for a long time without references and nodoby reverts them. all of the birthdates that i add to an article are legitimate (please assume good faith). also instead of saying "unsourced" why not congratulate me like the person below did for contributing birthdates to articles? i take time to research them and then you just go and revert my contributions to an article. also i have seen numerous wikipedia articles that use findagrave as a reference. please stop editing my contributions, thank you. Analog 9 (talk) 18:49, 31 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately not all articles conform to Wikipedia policy, but there are dedicated groups of editors who are reviewing older articles in an attempt to clean them up and bring them in to line with said policies. If you take the time to research the articles, then please do take the time to include the sources you are using so that others can verify the material. This is not an option, it is a requirement - any addition of unsourced biographical material added to biography articles can be reverted by an editor if a reliable source is not included. The sources in other articles are irrelevant to this discussion - community consensus is that Find a Grave does not meet the standards required; now that you are aware it should not be used, please do not continue to do so. Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 19:23, 31 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

for the record the birthdates i add to an article i obtain from public websites such as birthdatabase and california birth index. all information from there is correct and shouldn't really need to be sourced. do i really need to cite those websites when i add a DOB to an article? if i do please let me know and i will do so in the future, thank you. Analog 9 (talk) 18:49, 31 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Again, the material added must be verifiable and include a reliable source. In many instances the databases that are used to gather such information are not considered reliable and often call for assumptions and original research. Please check with the reliable sources noticeboard (WP:RSN) prior to using any of these sites for biography sourcing. Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 19:23, 31 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

just checked, the reliable sources noticeboard says nothing about birthdatabase.com being unreliable. let me know what i should do regarding correct birthdates obtained from this website. it is a useful tool for improving wikipedia articles since many of the birthdates are unavailable elsewhere. Analog 9 (talk) 22:29, 31 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Well that's a good start. If it hasn't been discussed there before, then just start a new section on the page and ask for input. The editors there are well-versed in all aspects of sourcing policies and criteria and they will help determine whether the birthdatabase.com should be used. My instinct tells me it may not be accepted as many databases are not (they're usually tertiary in nature), but they will be able to give you the thumbs up or down on its use. Adding DOB edit

Hi analog,

I noticed you have been doing a lot of work adding Dates of Births to many articles.

When you added the DOB to Daniel S. Loeb it was not made clear where you got the information from, since the first existing ref on that article is not available for me to read (a login is required), so I am just curious.

Keep up the good work. Ottawahitech (talk) 14:43, 31 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
