editThe ko’oloa ‘ula or red ‘ilima is part of the Mallow family (Malvaceae), another Hawaiian plant that is in the Mallow family that we use medicinally is ‘uhaloa. It is said that the juice of the red blossoms could be used medicinally as a laxative. It can be used to heal wounds, is an amazing plant for its anti-inflammatory properties, and helps with respiratory issues. Ko’oloa ’ula has phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and alkaloids that deliver some powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory medicine.
Ko’oloa ‘ula is endemic to O’ahu, Maui, Lana’i and Hawai’i island. It is endangered and is an endemic species. Rarely will you find it in the wild, it has become a popular shrub to use in urban landscapes. The seeds are wind dispersed. It has soft jagged toothed silvery green leaves with a velvety feel.
