I am sure that site is useful and all, but Wikipedia is not a collection of external links. Re: Isambard Kingdom Brunel at least, if that link went directly to information about Brunel I'd be inclined to let it stay. As it is, I'm going to remove it and warn you against spamming links to articles. Syrthiss (talk) 12:57, 22 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi - I hope I'm in the right place for people to see this message. I'm trying to get to the bottom of the spamming issue as I don't want us to be seen as doing the wrong thing. Initially I received a message stating that linking to websites was not acceptable. So we reviewed our approach to linking and understood from the rules that if we were enhancing an entry that was OK. So if for example there was an entry about a place or building on wikipedia, and we held, as a Government office, more info which would enhance the wiki entry - like the national record or an historic photo we could link to the specific record or photograph - rather than linking to the main website. Is that OK?

Generally, the 'enhancing the entry' is a case by case. We would much rather see links used to support specific information in the article text (for example - "Brunel died at the age of 52 in Hull" (obituary or other source that confirms that, linked as a reference) ) rather than just added at the end as kind of a 'look we also have information on this!'. Your last sentence seems to be an acceptable interpretation of the linking policy, and you might even go so far as to explain on the talk page why the link is useful for the purposes of the article instead of 'adding a link' as an edit summary. In your particular case, you came to our attention because you were only adding links by and large. If you were to look at the contributions of many other editors here, they will add text to various articles and maybe 1 in 100 edits will add an external link (if even then). In comparison to them, your activities appeared more to be someone trying to promote views to their website more than trying to help construct the encyclopedia. I hope this helps. ArbCom elections are now open! edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
