Somewhere on the page, it is claimed that the first European city created in Africa is Cape Town. I was taught differently and was always under the impression that this was the Cidade Velha, in Santiago, in Cape Verde. In fact, if you look at the creation date of the city in its own page... 1462. But if Madeira is to be considered part of Africa, then Funchal would most certainly qualify, as it was raised to city status in 1514. But it also depends on how far back one wants to go... Carthage would probably qualify, over 1500 years earlier
