editIt actually was a departure from what was then the usual practice. For example, Brian Mulroney the year before sought a seat in the house immediately after being elected leader, so too did Robert Stanfield in 1967, George Drew in 1948, Arthur Meighen in 1942 (unsuccessfully), Robert Manion in 1938, WLM King in 1919, Tupper in 1896.
