Satoshi Utsunomiya

edit

Satoshi Utsunomiya (born 1969) is a Japanese fossil hunter and science writer. He is an adjunct researcher at the Osaka City Museum of Natural History. He is known as the "salaryman fossil hunter".

He has made numerous discoveries, including the Kabunagaryu (Satsuma Utsunomiya Ryu), a dinosaur named after the former country name and the discoverer, as well as the largest theropod dinosaur in Japan and the first Spinosaurus tooth in western Japan, and various giant Mosasaurus specimens.

Brief Biography

edit

Under the guidance of Professor Hideo Nakaya (Kagoshima University at the time) and Professor Tamaki Sato (Kanagawa University), I published a descriptive paper on the Kabunagaryu (Satsuma Utsunomiya Ryu) in 2019. It was clearly identified as the oldest Elasmosauridae specimen in East Asia. Furthermore, during the cleaning process of the Kabunagaryu specimen, a foreign object was discovered in the throat area. In a collaborative research with Associate Professor Yasutoshi Nakajima (Tokyo City University), we announced that it was the world's first pellet fossil of the Kabunagaryu. I have been collaborating with Associate Professor Nakajima not only on pellet fossils but also on excavations, surveys, and research related to Spinosaurus specimens discovered in Wakayama Prefecture, pterosaur fossils (commonly known as Satsuma Winged Dragon) discovered in Kagoshima, and dinosaur bone beds.

I am from Ehime Prefecture. After graduating from Ritsumeikan University in 1992, I joined Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (now Panasonic). While working as a company employee, I continued my hobby of fossil collecting. As a lifelong pursuit, I have been conducting excavation surveys of prehistoric organisms and have discovered numerous large vertebrate fossils throughout Japan. I have made significant discoveries and conducted research on a wide range of Mesozoic vertebrate fossils in Japan, including the Kabunagaryu, which is named after myself, as well as various dinosaurs (carnivorous, piscivorous, and herbivorous), Mosasaurus specimens, and pterosaurs.
