Sandy Island

edit

I'd just like to apologize for my snippy edit summary at Sandy Island (New Caledonia). I somehow misread the history, and thought that you hadn't really reverted me. I now see that you did, of course, and I totally understand, since the satellite photo is really interesting, and does add a lot to the article. My removal wasn't accidental, though; there wasn't a lot of room for images in the article, and I wasn't sure where to put that one, so I cut it in favor of File:Sandy Island 1908 chart, which I think is more important to present visually. If you can come up with a good arrangement that also includes the satellite photo, that would be awesome (in the infobox, maybe? didn't seem quite appropriate to me, but we could probably make it work). For the time being, though, I would like to keep in at least the paragraph about the chart, since it's a pretty significant clue to the origin of the "island". Thanks for discussing. I don't believe adding multiple images/charts is at all a problem. (see Johnston Atoll as an example of another small island article with a relatively large amount of images) I think the charts you mention are very relevant to the island, and should be included -- there was already a link at the bottom of the page but moving that imagery onto the page is even better.
The history of the island is part of the mystery here, and I actually agree with you. My personal opinion is that the data shows a significant underwater formation that, judging from the historical charts, was probably once above the surface, and still remains relatively close to it. Part of the article even has a quote about the island's existence being dismissed as a modern GIS copy protection invention; who are we that we forget our own history so quickly?
I apologize if I have made you feel dissuaded in trying to add new content, which is one of the worst things that can happen when it is added on a volunteer basis such as this. The content you created has value, I just would prefer to see it included in a way that does not result in losing the sole satellite / aerial image.
Finally, I have no problem with the image itself being replaced, by another suitable satellite or aerial image, should you wish to do that. I would prefer to see more information and imagery added, if anything.

Ooh, thanks for pointing me to Johnston Atoll! I didn't realize you could put the map template thing in the infobox without breaking it. That opens up a lot of possibilities. I've just edited Sandy Island to an arrangement that includes all of the pictures in a pleasing way. In fact, it makes the satellite picture more visible, since it now appears next to the body of the article. Cheers, ∴ ZX95 [discuss] 15:21, 28 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
