Impact of COVID-19 on the season

The start of the season was impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 situation. Since the 2020 Third Division did not take place due to the pandemic, the Football Association of Maldives decided that 4 teams; semi finalists will be promoted to the 2021 Second Division Football Tournament.[1]

The draw was held on 19 January 2021, between 15 clubs in the hope of starting the tournament on 4 February. But the COVID-19 situation did not allow to start the competition on the given date and was forced to postpone until 18 April 2021.[2] Out of the 15 clubs, Lineage Sports Club who were placed in Group 3 after the draw held in January, withdrew from the competition due to financial problem following the postponement.[2]
