First of all, the dressing style of the North Korean people is distinctive, it is related to their custom about sitting indoors on the ground. In the upper body, they usually wear short clothes with silk ribbons instead of buttons; in the lower body men usually wear long and big trousers, while women wear loose long dresses. These clothes' design are purpose on making people feel comfortable to sit on the ground without affecting body stretching.[1] Secondly, North Korean people preferred white clothing, because they believed that white represents purity and simplicity; by the time the North Korean women and children's skirts made of satin have gradually become more colorful.[2]
- Traditional Activities
The North Korean women and children love sports, so jump seesaw and play on a swing are two of the most popular activities. As for the origin of the seesaw, it was said that in the ancient feudal society, women could not go out because of the feudal thoughts; however, women were curious about the outside of the world, so they created the seesaw to cooperate with each other, stoned the wood from the middle, one person stood at the height start of the wood, another person stood on the end of the wood. The one on one side jumps up high, and the one on the other side of the seesaw jumps down, they just peeking at the outside world in this way.[3] This activity has been passed down to modern times and appeared as a form of traditional activity for North Korean women in their life. The North Korean swing is usually tied to the tallest branch of the tree by two long ropes, and the girls stand on the swing.[4] Whenever the festival is over, the young girls will put on the colorful skirts to participate in the seesaw and swing races. The seesaw competition is determined by the difficulty of who is spinning in the air. The swing is determined according to the height of the swing.
- Characteristic Dance
Long drum dance is a characteristic dance of the North Korean people.[5] Every dancer has a small long drum on their chest and dress in a traditional North Korean long dress. Unlike the ordinary dance, long drum dance requires singing, dancing and drumming at the same time, so the requirements for dancers are demanding and challenging.
Special Food:
edit- Cold noodles[6] are one of Yanji's specialties, it tastes rich, chewy, sour, sweet and spicy;the noodles are made from buckwheat, soup is mainly made with beef soup and some ingredients[7]. In addition, people usually put some pieces of beef, apple, kimchi, egg , chicken meatballs as the cold noodles side, which is called "cold noodles cap".[8]
- Soybean paste soup[9]. The soybean paste is made from yellow beans fermented and seasoned; it is the favorite sauce for Korean people. Because soybeans form a kind of enzyme that is beneficial to the body after fermentation, it can prevent some diseases. Therefore, the main material of the soybean soup is the soybean paste, and usually people will add some beef, tofu, bean, sprouts, squash, cabbage or seafood in the soup according to personal preference.[10]
- Laver-wrapped rice[11]it is mainly made up of seaweed, rice, cucumber, carrot, egg rolls, wrapped in rolls.[12] .
