Birth, Early life & Education:

Jagannath “Bhring” Tupkari was born on 5th September 1925, to Late Shri Marotrao & Late Smt. Sarubai. He was born in Jagannath Puri, Odisha and was therefore named after Lord Jagannath, amongst his friends & colleagues he was better known as “Bhring” meaning Bhavara in Hindi, the name bestowed on him by his Guru & Mentor Dr. Vinay Mohan Sharma (a well-known personality in the field of Hindi Literature). To his family he is affectionately remembered as Dada ji. “Bhring” since his childhood was passionate about Art & Literature, he started painting, writing poems & stories from an early age and to his credit his first poem was published in newspaper while in school. His love for Hindi & Urdu language drew him during his youth, towards Kavi Sammelans & Mushairas at Nagpur & later in Mumbai.  “Bhring” amongst his friends & collegue was known for his gentle & soft-spoken nature. He went on to complete his education in MA (Hindi Medium) from City College, Nagpur.

Work & Profession:

He joined All India Radio (AIR), Nagpur in late 1940s. Later at the behest of Late Shri. Pt. Narendra Sharma ji he was transferred to AIR, Mumbai, in the year 1957.  He was associated with AIR for almost 3 decades. During his association with AIR, Nagpur & Mumbai, he wrote, produced, and directed many plays which were broadcasted under famous program known as “Hawa Mahal” and Bombay-B Station of AIR. Mumbai soon became his Karmabhoomi though Nagpur remained close to his heart.  His love for writing and on suggestion of his friends, “Bhring” took early retirement from AIR to pursue his career in Hindi Film Industry. He established himself as a Story, Dialogue, & Screenplay Writer and penned Songs for few Films & TV Serials. He contributed to Hindi Cinema as Dialogue Writer of Do Raha, Prabhat, Do Number Ke Amir etc, Story Writer for, Namak Halal, , Meera Ke Girdhar,  Luv Kush (as Story & Song writer), Shiv Mahima (Story & Dialogue) Hanuman (Animation Film on Lord Hanuman) etc.  During making of epic serial Mahabharat, Late Shri Pt. Narendra Sharma ji, introduced him to Late Shri. B.R.Chopra saheb. He was credited for his contribution in Research Work & Dialogue Direction and penned Doha’s. Mahabharat is regarded as one of the greatest works in the history of Hindi Cinema. Besides Mahabharat, he was also associated with Dasari Narayan Rao’s tele serial Vishwamitra. “Bhring” has unique distinction of being credited with research work & presenting longest monologue (talk show) in his voice called Natak Ki Kahani. AIR broadcasted more than 1000 episodes of Natak Ki Kahani, his research and presentation involved exploring history of art & drama showcasing from evolution stage to its present modern form. During his long career spanning more than 5 decades in the field of Arts & Literature, “Bhring” also wrote many plays which were performed in notable auditoriums such as Prithvi Theatre, Tejpal, Doordarshan etc. It’s worth mentioning that his plays on youth festival in Simla such as Mitti Ki Mehak & Thandi Aag were considered as classics by the critics. “Bhring” authored various upanyas & kavya sangraha such as Pankhudiyan, Dus Ka Note, Amitabh, Pem Lamu to name a few. He wrote articles on social issues, which were regularly published in newspapers & periodicals such as Navbharat Times, Dharmayug, Madhuri etc. One of the longest works of “Bhring” was ballad Geet Govind on Lord Krishna & Radha which he expressed through his paintings & poem, unfortunately this work could not be published due to fire at publishing house destroying his work of almost 18 years.

Awards & Accolades:

Government of Maharashtra’s Sahitya Academy Madhav Muktibodh Puruskar in the year 1994 for his contribution in the field of Hindi Literature, Best Dialogue Writer of the year for Film Do Raha (by UP Film Journalist Association Lucknow), Namak Halal was Blockbuster of the year completing Platinum Jubilee. Many prestigious social organisations recognised his contribution for tele serial Mahabharat & Other Works.
