The Banu Ubayd wandered in a region between Tlemcen and Oujda. In the north-west, they reached where The moulouwiya river meets the Mediterranean sea. And to the south in the Ksour of Tuat.

Their neighbors in this regions were the Banu Amir and Banu Abdelwad with which they fought long wars. They eventually lost and submitted to the Authority of the Abdelwadid under Yghmoracen, who had severely defeated them. Later when the rule of Abdelwadid weakened they imposed taxes on the route to Tlemcen, Oujda, Nedroma and Beni Iznassen and gave the abdelwadid Sultans a part of the collected taxes.

This practice initially continued under the Marinid Sultan Abu Al hassan, who defeated the Abdelwadid and conquered Telemcen, but he quickly stripped them of this privilege and gave it to the Berber Beni Iznassen tribe. Abu-al Hassan further pursued the Banu Ubayd Allah in the remote desert and sent an army under the Beni Iznassen General Yahya ben Al-iz to conquer the Saharan Ksours and expell the Banu Ubayd Allah from them. Unhappy with this treatment the Banu Ubayd Allah rebelled against the Merinids and succeded in killing the Merinid General Yahya ben Al-iz. Fearing a Merinid retaliation they escaped to the remote Sahran inlands.
