You Bet! is a British game show based around the format of the German show Wetten, dass..? developed by Frank Elstner. You Bet! ran on ITV, mostly on Saturday nights but sometimes on Fridays, between 20 February 1988 and 12 April 1997. It is rumoured to return in the near future. The broadcaster for the revival has not been announced.
Hosts and Co-Hosts
editBruce Forsyth hosted the first three series. Matthew Kelly hosted the next five series and Darren Day hosted the last two series. Ellis Ward co-hosted the first five series. Diane Youdale co-hosted the ninth series and Sarah Matravers co-hosted the tenth and last series. The host for the revival has not been announced.
Old Format
editA panel of celebrities would bet on the ability of members of the public to achieve unlikely challenges and stunts, which they had usually planned and rehearsed many times, within a limited amount of time. The studio audience would also place a bet on the outcomes. The panellists would receive points for each outcome they predicted correctly, based on the percentage of the studio audience that also placed a correct bet. The accumulated total of points achieved by the celebrities would be added to the points totalled by the studio audience, increased several times over, converted into pounds and donated to a charity chosen by the celebrity panellist who had achieved the highest score. In the first seven series, the panellists and the host would each "sponsor" a challenge, If the challenge sponsored by the panellist or the host was not achieved, one of them would have to do a forfeit. In the eighth series, the lowest celebrity scorer after five challenges would do only one forfeit challenge, which would be broadcast the following week's show. The public then got to vote in at home to donate £1,000 to a charity of their choice if the celebrity succeeded or failed the challenge. In the eighth series, the panellist with the lowest score after five challenges would have to do a forfeit chosen automatically chosen by the crew. In the last series, panellists could play their YOU BET! BONUS CARD, which meant their points would be doubled if they successfully guessed the outcome of a challenge (which can only be played once in the entire show). Also there, the panellist with the lowest score after five challenges would do a Celebrity Challenge which was chosen by the studio audience with cryptic clue titles (e.g., "Ooh! That's better!" or "Dangling Down").
New Format
editA panel of three celebrities will bet their money on the ability of members of the public to achieve unlikely challenges and stunts, which they had usually planned and rehearsed many times, within a limited amount of time. The panellists will start with £1,000 and must bet no more than £900 on the first challenge. For example, a panellist will bet £500 on a challenge. If they predict correctly, £500 will be added to their money but if they predict incorrectly, they will lose £500. The studio audience will also place a bet on the outcomes. But instead of accumulating the panellists points for correct predictions they make, they will compete against each other to see who will have made the most correct predictions. After five challenges, the celebrity with the highest money will contest the "Sudden Bet" while the other two celebrities will lose their money which will go to the celebrity with their highest money and leave with nothing. The celebrity and the audience member will compete against each other in the "Sudden Bet" where they must bet on the exact amount a challenger will get. challenge to see who will win the total money the three panellist have after five challenge. The other two panellists will lose leave with nothing. If the panellist wins, they will win the money for their chosen charity. But if the audience member wins, they will win the money to spend on whatever they want. There will be no sponsoring challenges where the panellist and host who sponsored a challenge would have to do a forfeit if they predict incorrectly (as seen in the first seven series of You Bet!), there will be no celebrity challenges for the panellist who had the lowest money after five challenges (as seen in the eighth and tenth series of You Bet!), there will be no forfeits for the panellist with the lowest money after five challenges (as seen in the ninth series of You Bet!) and the You Bet! bonus card, as seen in the last series of You Bet! will not be used.
