James Knowlan was a circuit rider in the Methodist Church of Great Britain.

Knowlan was born in Ireland. He was educated there, and converted to Methodism as a young man.[1]

In 1821, he was assigned to the Montreal circuit.[2] He was unhappy with his appointment to Montreal, and arranged a switch with ? Lusher, who had been assigned to the Halifax circuit.[1]
