User:William M. Connolley/For me/Musing on the state of wiki

I may fill this out one day. For now, it is just random jottings, mostly about the GW pages.

Once upon a time, Men were Real Men etc and Titanic struggles raged across the global warming pages, with edits of substance affecting how we described Real Issues - the satellite temperature record, solar variation, global warming. The septics lost, here and in the outside world, and sanity prevailed. Now pygmies skulk through the undergrowth fiddle-faddling with tags filling talk pages with drivel.

A noticeable difference between now and then was that even the wackos actually wanted to change the scientific content of the pages - they were wrong, but they weren't fools, and they actually used the talk pages to discuss things. They had to: they actually wanted to get their viewpoint across. Now, in these debased times, the septics main objective is obfustication and filling the talk pages with enough weeds that no-one from outside can see through.
